The year 2015 marked a significant milestone. Especially in Japan’s renewable energy industry. Most importantly with the construction of a massive offshore wind farm by Hitachi Zosen.

For this ambitious project involved the building of a 220MW wind farm off the coast of Fukushima. Most noteworthy and one of the regions worst hit by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. This project was a significant step towards Japan’s goal of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.  Moreover and increasing its use of clean energy sources.

The Hitachi Zosen offshore wind farm is a testament to the power of innovation and technology. Especially in achieving sustainable development goals. The project also involved the installation of 65 wind turbines.

Most noteworthy, each with a capacity of 3.4MW. Thereby making it one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world. The turbines were designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. For that’s including typhoons and earthquakes.

Thereby ensuring that the wind farm would continue to operate efficiently and safely in all conditions.

Adding to Energy Mix

Apart from its size and technological advancements, the Hitachi Zosen offshore wind farm is also significant for its contribution to Japan’s energy mix. The project is expected to generate enough energy to power over 70,000 homes. So that’s reducing Japan’s carbon emissions by over 200,000 tons annually. This is a significant step towards Japan’s goal of reducing its carbon emissions by 26% by 2030. Especially as outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Example for Japan

Overall, the Hitachi Zosen offshore wind farm is a prime example of Japan’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development. It is a testament to the country’s resilience in the face of adversity. More importantly, a celebration of its determination. Most importantly to build a better future for its citizens. As we continue to face the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, initiatives like the Hitachi Zosen offshore wind farm provide hope and inspiration for a sustainable future.

Construction will also start in April 2020. Moreover, financial terms weren’t provided.

Offshore wind turbines

The Nikkei newspaper reported today that the project will cost about 100 billion yen ($852 million).

Just announced a 125-pylon offshore wind farm of 300 megawatts capacity in the Baltic sea for the Swedish energy provider, Vattenfall.

The project is expected to be operational by around 2020 and will be located in the German-Danish block, North Sea. Vattenfall is investing $2.2 billion in the project and Hitachi Zosen are responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the turbines.
