USA Fully Electric Car Sales Up 47% In 2017 says CleanTechnica

The US electric car market has continued to grow at a rapid pace in the past year — led by California’s particularly strong electric car market, of course. From January through August, sales of 8 fully electric cars* grew 47% in the country. Sales of 6 plug-in hybrid cars were up 30%. Overall, that meant sales of these 14 plug-in car were up 40%.

August 2017 vs August 2016 was less dramatic but still a period of strong growth. Fully electric car sales were up 19%. Plug-in hybrid sales were up 4%. Overall, that meant a 13% increase in plug-in car sales.If the Tesla estimates** are to be believed, the Tesla Model S was far ahead in the #1 spot, the Chevy Bolt held tight at #2, the Toyota Prius Prime rose to #3, the Tesla Model X dropped to #4, and the Chevy Volt and Nissan LEAF retained their places at #5 and #6, respectively. Ah, gone are the days of the neverending LEAF vs Volt battle at the top of the charts (which was a super tight competition for years).


If you look at the January through August stats (which are educated estimates** but certainly not exact), the Model S is crushing it (despite its high price tag). That hints at how extremely competitive the car is in its niche segment. The Volt has a slight lead over the Model X, which has an even slighter lead over the Toyota Prius Prime. The Chevy Bolt has a gap to cover to catch up with any of those models, but now that sales are picking up and availability is nationwide, it has potential to climb up the ranking and perhaps even land on the podium by the end of the year.

We can surely expect electric car sales to keep increasing as Tesla Model 3 production ramps up, the next-generation Nissan LEAF arrives on dealer lots, and overall EV awareness rises. I would be surprised if our report one year from now doesn’t show a more dramatic electric car sales increase of 82% at this point in time.

Jaguar’s engineering and design teams have torn up the rule book to create a bespoke electric architecture, matched with dramatic design. The result is a no-compromise smart, five seat sports car and a performance SUV in one.

The electric motors and 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack were designed in-house by Jaguar Land Rover to give the best possible performance and range for most daily commutes.

For rapid charging, using a public 50kW DC charging network, a full charge will take just over two hours. Enough to deliver an estimated 220 miles range (measured on the US EPA test cycle)(1).

The I-PACE transforms the electric driving experience and offers the driver-focused performance and response Jaguar is renowned for. To help deliver this, the I-PACE has electric motors on the front and rear axles. Their combined output is 400hp and 516-lb ft. of torque(1) – the same torque rating as the F-TYPE SVR.

Volvo launches noiseless electric buses in Gothenburg

Buses that glide noiselessly without emissions, that pick up passengers indoors and which are powered by a renewable source of electricity – this will become a reality in 2015, through the launch of an ultramodern bus service in Gothenburg. The new technology enables completely new possibilities for future public-transport. Behind the initiative is the Volvo Group, in cooperation with the Swedish Energy Agency, the City of Gothenburg, Västtrafik, Lindholmen Science Park and Johanneberg Science Park.

Like something out of a vision of the future, but which is already a reality here and now, buses powered entirely by electricity from renewable sources will become a part of the Gothenburg’s public-transport system. The buses will be extremely fuel-efficient, silent and completely emissions-free. Passengers onboard will have access to new technologies and at least one of the bus stops will be located indoors.

“This represents an entirely new mode of travel and will allow for the public-transport system to contribute to a more pleasant urban environment. A silent and emissions-free public-transport system will enable the inclusion of locations in the city that are currently off limits. It is immensely satisfying to be able to launch this in our hometown, in cooperation with Region Västra Götaland and the City of Gothenburg,” commented Olof Persson, President and CEO of Volvo.

Sustainable social development is closely linked to the development of new transportation systems. The use of electric power not only places Gothenburg on the map in terms of sustainable and innovative solutions for public transport; the new bus service will also open up new possibilities in city and urban planning.

Commencing in 2015, the electric buses are to run between Johanneberg Science Park adjacent to Chalmers and Lindholmen Science Park in Hisingen.

“The electric bus service entails a new mode of public-transport system usage, which is highly positive for Gothenburg. It will highlight Gothenburg as a progressive city in terms of city planning. This is also in line with our prioritized objective of having Gothenburg reduce its climate impact to become a climate-neutral city, and of increasing sustainable travel,” explains Anneli Hulthén (Social Democrat), Chairman of the Municipal Board.

In addition to the electric buses, the cooperation also includes the creation and trial runs of new bus-stop solutions, traffic-routing systems, safety concepts, energy supply and business models.

The hope is that the project, known as ElectriCity, will attract more commuters to use public transport. This is also expected to clear the way for more, attractive public-transport solutions in the Västra Götaland region.

Mahindra Racing sets Goodwood benchmark as Nick Heidfeld claims open-wheel eRecord in M4Electro

3 July 2017, Oxford: Mahindra Racing flew the flag for the FIA Formula E Championship at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend, setting a brand new open-wheel eRecord in the process.

Running up the hill on each of the four days of the popular event, Heidfeld cut several seconds off his time on each attempt, culminating in his now-official record of 48.59 seconds, which was set on Sunday afternoon with all eyes on the M4Electro – at the event and online.

Challenging convention, the team took the unprecedented step of debuting its brand new, as yet unraced, M4Electro in public for the first time. The car, with which the team will contest the 2017-18 Formula E season, raced up the famous Goodwood hill with Nick Heidfeld at the wheel. 

Heidfeld, who holds the outright record on the hillclimb, set about laying a brand new electric benchmark. It was an ambitious challenge, but one that Mahindra Racing and the German driver tackled with confidence.

In addition to demonstration runs, the M4Electro competed in the final shoot out against a field of forty-two, which included a wide variety of cars ranging from the Le Mans GT winning Aston Martin, to Euro-NASCARs, and a Porsche 911 GTE Cup, ultimately setting the fifth-fastest lap.

In between the runs, the team’s brand new M4Electro was present as part of the Sky Sports F1 pitlane showcase, offering ardent fans the opportunity to learn more about the Formula E Championship and Mahindra Racing’s next generation challenger.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is renowned for attracting the cutting edge of automotive brands, motorsport teams and drivers, past and present, but this was arguably the first time that a team had sent its future racecar up the legendary hill. The M4Electro will race for the first time later this year, when the 2017-18 FIA Formula E Championship gets underway, so it is an impressive feat for the car already to be a record-breaker.

Dilbagh Gill, Team Principal: “We really enjoyed our time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Not only have we unveiled the M4Electro to the public, but we have also challenged the sceptic’s view of electric vehicles being neither fast nor exciting. It’s been great to invite the fans to walk around the garage and ask as many questions as they like. To showcase the latest Mahindra Racing technology to such an incredible audience, both at Goodwood itself and through the online and social media coverage, was special. To then set a new open-wheel eRecord was the perfect conclusion to a wonderful event.” 

Nick Heidfeld: “I’ve been coming to the Goodwood Festival of Speed for many years, and it never fails to disappoint! The variety and volume of cars and people is always astonishing. It was great fun to drive up the hill with the target of setting a new electric single-seater record, which we managed to do – but I think we have to come back to challenge the outright electric record! It’s positive to see that next season’s drivetrain, which we showed here for the first time, ran problem-free. We haven’t had many tests with it before so, all-in-all, it was a very good, productive and fun weekend.”
