Back at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, my buddy from Geekazine and I raided the new car display from BMW called the i8. 
LOL Now of course we all know this car but man it was funny how i got into the glass doors to touch the car.

I showed a very nice gentleman from Germany a copy of my book Build Your Own Plugin Hybrid EV. I showed him where we added the car. His American counterpart explained in German and off to the races we go.

2016 Hyundai Sonata GT Plug-in Hybrid Electric Car Test Drive Results

When Hyundai launched its first plug-in hybrid vehicle I said please let me test that car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit!! 

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is rated for a 22 mile all electric power 

The best part about this plugin hybrid is it can recharge in as little as two and a half hours with a Level 2 charger. 


The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid will be built at the Asan, South Korea plant and will go on sale in select markets later this year.


Although the Sonata Plug-in has alot of tech behind it, expect driving conditions to be better than turbo in most situations.

With a 9.8 kWh lithium polymer battery pack, roughly five times larger than the Sonata Hybrid’s battery, is expected to give Sonata Plug-in Hybrid an all-electric range of up to 22 miles, farther than any other midsize PHEV sedan.

As Green Car Reports explains the Sonata Plug-In Hybrid (40 mpg combined, 27 miles of electric range) competes only with the Ford Fusion Energi (38 mpg combined, 20 miles of electric range)–and perhaps the smaller 2016 Chevrolet Volt (42 mpg combined, 53 miles of electric range).

Sonata Plug-in Hybrid uses a six-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai’s Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device (TMED), a 50 kW electric motor, in place of a torque converter. The 50 kW electric motor is 32 percent more powerful than the motor used the in regular Sonata Hybrid and allows EV operation at higher speeds. So when cruising on the highway you go all Electric. Sick?!

Also, the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid operates just like the Sonata Hybrid once the onboard battery charge is depleted. 

Sonata PHEV delivered about 110 plug MPGe combined in EV mode based on my estimates. With more of a 35 mile EV pack if you drove it efficiently. 

 Sonata Plug-in HybridIn charge sustaining mode, the Sonata PHEV is expected to return 44 mpg in the city, 55 mpg on the highway and 42 mpg combined based on internal testing in ECO mode. Recharge time ranges from two and a half hours at a 240V Level 2 charging station to five hours using a standard 120V outlet.


Sonata PHEV uses the same functional design changes as the Sonata Hybrid to improve its drag coefficient to a class-leading 0.24 as well as provide visual cues to distinguish the hybrid models from other Sonatas. Visual changes to the PHEV’s exterior include a charging port on the driver front fender, unique grille, front and rear bumpers, front fenders, front and rear lights, chrome side sill moldings, Hybrid badging and new wheels. A distinctive instrument cluster provides Plug-in Hybrid drivers with additional information about the PHEV system’s functions. A charge indicator is located on top of the dashboard to make it easy to see the state of charge from outside.

Ford C-MAX Energi Plug-In Hybrid Delivers Expected 550-Mile Range. Nearly Double Electric-Only Range of Prius

Ford announced that the new C-MAX Energi Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is expected to travel up to 550 miles on a single tank of gas, exceeding the range of both the Volt (379 mi) and the Prius PHEV (540 mi). In electric-only mode, the C-MAX Energi offers nearly twice the range of the Prius plug-in.

Drivers of the C-MAX Energi could travel round-trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas or from Detroit to New York City on a single tank.

The new Ford C-MAX Energi is expected to achieve more than 20 miles of electric-only range – nearly double the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid – and a 550-mile overall range to become the first hybrid vehicle ever that can be driven from Sacramento to San Diego on a single tank of gas and make the average American commute without gasoline.

With a maximum electric-only speed projected to top that of Prius plug-in, C-MAX Energi drivers might be able to reach wherever they’re going a little faster, too. Topping it off, C-MAX Energi delivers fuel economy that is the equivalent of 95 miles per gallon (MPGe) combined city/highway.

John Davis, chief nameplate engineer for Ford’s compact cars and utility vehicles, said it’s all designed to improve the driving experience: from making the 550-mile trek down Highway 99 from Sacramento to San Diego to the daily 20-mile one-way trip to work – the distance some reports suggest the average American commutes.

“We are proud C-MAX Energi is the first plug-in hybrid that can deliver a 550-mile overall range and more than 20 miles of electric range as it gives customers great flexibility to commute to work, then take off for a road trip while passing many gas stations along the way,” says Davis. “C-MAX Energi is a great symbol for the leading fuel economy we’re delivering across our lineup to give customers the power of choice to save money at the pump.”

C-MAX Energi is part of Ford’s first dedicated line of hybrid vehicles in North America and will soon be available for order at Ford’s certified electric-vehicle dealerships. C-MAX Energi operates just like a traditional hybrid with two key differences – owners must plug in the vehicle using its charge port and C-MAX Energi has a larger battery pack.

Power of choice

Already available for order is C-MAX Hybrid – expected to be America’s most affordable hybrid utility vehicle with a base price of $25,995, including destination and delivery – with a cost that is $1,300 lower than Toyota Prius v. C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi figure prominently in Ford’s rollout of five electrified vehicles this year.

“Ford’s electrified vehicles offer a great combination of efficiency, performance, technology and affordability that we believe will help spur adoption of these advanced vehicles,” says Kevin Layden, director, Ford Electrification Programs and Engineering. “C-MAX Energi not only offers leading efficiency, it has 50 more horsepower than the Prius plug-in hybrid along with class-exclusive technologies such as our hands-free liftgate and active park assist for easier parallel parking.”

Though Ford is concentrating on hybrid versions of C-MAX in the U.S., the designs of C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid are based on the gasoline- and diesel-powered European version.

The C-MAX Energi has a total system of 188hp horsepower useing the all-new 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine – powerful and fuel efficient and among the most advanced non-turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains Ford has ever offered.

The C-MAX Energi is produced at Ford’s Wayne, Mich.-based Michigan Assembly Plant alongside the new C-MAX Hybrid and the Focus Electric.
