New Wind Turbine and Solar Panels at Town of Coventry, CT

The Town of Coventry held a dedication ceremony to celebrate the installation of new solar photovoltaic panels on the Town Hall Annex Building and a new wind turbine located behind the Town Hall near the Coventry High School football field. These clean energy installations were made possible with funding from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF).
Both systems are helping to reduce the Town’s energy costs and protect the environment.
“Between its wind turbine and earned solar PV system, the Town can generate up to 8 kilowatts of clean power, providing enough energy for a typical household,” noted Hedman.
The overall benefit to the environment in terms of annual CO2 emissions savings resulting from Coventry’s clean energy commitment, including the solar PV installation, wind turbine installation, Town clean energy purchase, and CTCleanEnergyOptions signups, is the equivalent of conserving 78,400 gallons of gasoline each year or planting 574 acres of forest. The town’s efforts are helping reduce CO2 emissions by 1.5 million pounds per year.

State Energy Efficiency Programs That Work Best

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — States have taken the lead in developing energy policies in the U.S., experimenting with a variety of approaches while the federal government has remained deadlocked over energy and climate policies.
Sanya Carley, an assistant professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, examines the state-level policies and assesses their effectiveness for meeting energy and policy goals in the current issue of Review of Policy Research.
“The states are putting their best foot forward, and that is admirable,” Carley said. “But they need to be deliberate and coordinated in their approaches in order to be effective. And there are limitations to what can be accomplished with policies at the state and regional levels.”
Her article synthesizes findings from research literature and provides a summary of the current understanding of state energy policy instruments and their role in energy-policy innovation.

Connecticut Innovations (CI), the state’s quasi-public authority responsible for technology investing and innovation development and administrator of the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), today announced that it has appointed Bryan Garcia president of CCEF, effective May 31, 2011, an appointment recommended to CI’s Finance Committee by the CCEF Board. Garcia, who was a member of CCEF’s staff for six and half years from 2000 to 2007, returns to CCEF after serving for four years as program director of the Yale Center for Business and the Environment.
“Bryan is passionate about clean energy and the environment and brings a keen understanding of industry trends, gaps and opportunities to this post,” said CCEF Chair Norma Glover. “His strategic approach will be invaluable in propelling CCEF to the next level, and we are delighted that he is returning to lead the fund’s extraordinary team.”
At Yale, Garcia directed the Center for Business and the Environment, a joint initiative of the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and School of Management. The Center is a focal point for research, education, and outreach to advance business solutions to global environmental problems.
