USGBC Awards Southampton’s HGA House LEED® Platinum Certification 4,800 Sq. Ft. Home One of Largest LEED Platinum Homes on Record

Hello HGA House to the scene. I mean 37 Parkside Avenue in Southampton, known as “HGA House” was awarded LEED platinum certification by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for achievement in green homebuilding and design. The HGA House is owned by David and Saundra Dubin, who were devastated when their original home was destroyed by fire in late 2009. Today, the HGH House is thrilled that their home may be among the top largest green homes in the country.

That which has risen from the ashes to become a model of net zero energy. I mean embodied carbon negative green building.

Frank Dalene; co-founder of the HGA House and the president of Telemark made these comments.“Innovative green building is transforming the world for a better future and we are doing it one home at a time.” Telemark served as general contractor for the project.

“As a LEED-certified home, HGA House serves as a model of greener living for the entire community,” said Nate Kredich, Vice President of Residential Market Development for the USGBC. “The home sets the example that we can all live better by reducing our environmental footprint, cutting our utility bills, and coming home to a greener place to live. What sets HGA House apart is its size.

The HGA House combines LEED Platinum, net zero energy, and embodied carbon negative building. All in a 4,800 square foot luxury home renovation. The home’s embodied carbon footprint was successfully measured by ICEMAN. That was developed by Frank Dalene. All to provide a market driven solution to the challenge of reducing carbon emissions.

In addition, the HGA House earned a Phase I Embodied Carbon Negative certification. That means the HGH House construction of the home reduced more carbon emissions than carbon emitted.

Along with the Architects and Telemark, HGA House team assembled green craftsmen and suppliers. Therefore to develop a plan for the building of the HGA House.

Among the aspects of the HGA House Dalene discussed were:

1. Passive features from the architect’s design such as increased soffits to maximize solar gain in winter and maximize shading in summer

2. A south facing orientation

3. High efficiency windows

4.,Spray foam insulation – low expansion foam around windows, doors

5. HERS Rating 25 was achieved – tests check for air leakage in ducts and the house. Including all ductwork in conditioned space and sealed. Finally all joints caulked to decrease air infiltration.

6. Low Flow fixtures and dual flush toilets

7. A rainwater harvesting tank to collect rainwater from gutters for irrigation

8. LED lighting using 85% less energy than conventional bulbs and designed to last for 50,000 hours

9. Smart house technology including LED screens on first and second floor to monitor house readings. Then programmable systems that turn on and off should an alarm sound. In addition, all rooms pre-wired for future programming and home energy monitoring.

10. A high efficiency wood burning fireplace to provide clean and efficient burning to minimize heat loss – the fireplace produces 50,000 BUT/hr.

12. Geothermal system – open loop, two stage, variable speed with all ductwork insulated and sealed

14. Solar thin film on the south facing part of house

15. Solar panels on the east and west facing roof

16. Solar thermal is there for summer mode to provide domestic hot water and heat dump for pool heat mixing with the return water from the pool. In the winter mode also supplies domestic hot water with the excess hot water going through hot water heating coils. Then it’s distributing heat through the ductwork to heat the house. Yes folks as a primary heat source.

 In conclusion, the HGH House New technologies were integrated into the house including:

1.  LED lighting – CREE LR-6 high hats using only 12.5 watts of input power to deliver 1000 lumens. That’s the LR6-DR1000 and has unmatched fixture efficacy of up to 84 lumens per watt.  It consumes half the energy of a typical CFL down light. All the while delivering the same light output.

4. Solar thermal winter mode heat dump

5. Whole house monitoring system.
