WASHINGTON (NNS) — The deputy chief of naval operations for fleet readiness and logistics (N4), recognized 12 commands for community service excellence when he announced the winners of the 2011 Navy Community Service Environmental Stewardship Flagship awards, Nov. 23. 

The awards, announced by Vice Adm. William R. Burke, recognize the best year-round volunteer supported program or special project that promotes education and good stewardship of environmental resources. The Environmental Stewardship Flagship is one of five flagships in the Navy Community Service program. The other four flagships include Personal Excellence Partnership, Project Good Neighbor, Campaign Drug Free, and Health, Safety and Fitness.

In a Naval message announcing the winners, Burke, the Environmental Stewardship Flagship sponsor, said, “Congratulations to all award winners and honorable mentions, and to the many other nominees. You should be proud of your accomplishments leading by example to protect the environment and strengthen community ties. Your actions exemplify the Navy’s commitment to protecting the environment and enhancing local communities as a global force for good.”

The 2011 winners in the shore category are: 

Small (under 200 personnel): Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit, Whidbey, Oak Harbor, Wash.
Medium (200 to 499 personnel): Navy Information Operations Command Sugar Grove, W.Va.
Large (500 or more personnel): Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.

Winners in the sea category are: 

Small: FBM Operational Test Support Unit TWO, Cape Canaveral, Fla.
Medium: Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 57, San Diego, Calif.
Large: USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). 

Winners in the overseas category are:

Small: Navy Munitions Command, East Asia Division, Unit Guam.
Large: USS Frank Cable (AS 40).

Commands receiving honorable mentions include: 

Small shore command: Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Medium shore command: Naval Base Coronado, Calif.
Large shore command: Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga.
Large sea command: USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).

Examples of winning community service initiatives to promote environmental awareness include implementing recycling programs, organizing educational community outreach events, and participating in environmental clean-ups and beautification projects.

Award winners will receive commemorative plaques and honorable mentions will receive certificates from flagship sponsor N4.
