Canadian Solar and Samsung Launch Facility, Create 200 Clean Energy Jobs in London, Ontario

Samsung and Canadian Solar in London, Ontario Open Solar Energy Manufacturing Facility

A major milestone in a Samsung Ontario Solar Energy facility transformation was celebrated today. Canadian Solar Inc. and Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. officially opened a new solar manufacturing facility in London. This is creating most notably more than 200 high-skilled, local jobs. This also marks the fourth manufacturing plant launched under the Green Energy Investment Agreement (GEIA) between Samsung and the Government of Ontario.

Powering Jobs and Innovation

Located at 1400 Global Drive, the facility began operations in November 2013. It also manufactures solar PV modules and medium-voltage power stations for Samsung’s Ontario solar projects. That’s also including:

  1. The 100 MW Grand Renewable Energy Park in Haldimand County
  2. The 100 MW Sol-Luce Kingston Solar PV Project in Kingston and Loyalist Township
  3. Additional solar developments under the GEIA

Moreover, the plant will also serve as a research and development hub, further strengthening Canada’s leadership in solar energy innovation.

Samsung Ontario Solar Energy: Clean Energy with Economic Impact

Samsung’s investment in Canadian Solar’s London facility fulfills its GEIA commitment to create four major manufacturing sites in Ontario. This move also fuels Samsung’s broader solar pipeline while contributing to thousands of engineering, procurement, and construction jobs across the province.

In total, Samsung’s GEIA projects are most likely expected to generate 9,000 clean energy jobs throughout Ontario.

“Samsung is delivering on our commitments to London and Ontario,” said Ki-Jung Kim, Senior Vice President of Samsung C&T. “We’re proud to create clean energy while strengthening local economies.”

A $5 Billion Investment in Ontario’s Future

Samsung and its partners are investing $5 billion to build the largest cluster of solar and also wind projects in the world. Under GEIA, Samsung will also install 300 MW of solar capacity; all as part of a larger 1,369 MW renewable energy portfolio. These projects support Ontario’s bold goal to phase out coal-fired electricity by the end of 2014.

The London facility joins a network of Ontario-based manufacturing partners:

  1. Siemens in Tillsonburg
  2. CS Wind in Windsor
  3. SMA in Toronto

Together, these plants now employ more than 1,000 manufacturing workers. Samsung has also pledged to support its partners in pursuing export opportunities beyond Ontario.

“This facility supports our mission to grow solar energy in Canada and create lasting green jobs,” said Dr. Shawn Qu, Chairman and CEO of Canadian Solar Inc. “It also solidifies our position as Canada’s leading solar energy provider.”

Voices of Support

Bob Chiarelli, Ontario’s Minister of Energy, called the project a vital part of the province’s future:

“I’m proud of our renewable energy sector. These investments will keep creating jobs for years to come.”

Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for FedDev Ontario, praised the economic boost:

“This plant brings new jobs, business growth, and success not just to London, but to all of southern Ontario.”

Deb Matthews, MPP for London North Centre, added:

“Canadian Solar’s investment means more manufacturing and R&D jobs for our city. It’s great news for London and our commitment to clean energy.”

A Powerful Step Toward a Cleaner, More Resilient Economy

This partnership between Canadian Solar and Samsung isn’t just about manufacturing—that’s because it’s about momentum. By launching this facility, they’ve turned global investment into local impact. The result? Hundreds of good-paying jobs, millions in clean energy infrastructure, and a deeper commitment to Ontario’s green future.

Moreover, the project supports both climate goals and economic revitalization. As Ontario moves away from coal, facilities like this prove that clean energy and job creation can go hand in hand. At the same time, these initiatives lay the foundation for long-term innovation and export opportunities.

Because of these investments, Ontario is becoming a global leader in renewable energy manufacturing. As a result, communities across the province are gaining cleaner air, stronger economies, and a more sustainable path forward.

Simply put, this isn’t just another factory—it’s also a turning point. It most definitely shows that when the public and private sectors collaborate, they can also deliver real results: clean power, secure jobs, and a better future for everyone.
