UK Green Building Council
The UK Green Building Council has responded to a report from consumer group Which? on how to improve home energy participation and the uptake of energy efficiency measures in UK homes.
The report, A Local Approach to Energy Efficiency, sets out two key recommendations. First, to make better use of existing Government funds by focusing on a local approach for energy efficiency delivery. Secondly, for Government to create a new cross-departmental energy efficiency strategy with a 10-year framework. Home energy participation is crucial for achieving these goals.

Richard Twinn, Policy and Public Affairs Officer at the UK Green Building Council, said:
“Which? is right to suggest we need a local approach to improve home energy efficiency, as the Green Deal Communities programme. Essentially with its street-by-street vision that actively engages communities in the retrofitting process. For this has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise gloomy outlook. Especially for the Coalition’s flagship scheme.
This initiative has also empowered local residents to take ownership of energy efficiency improvements. That’s definitely fostering a sense of community while simultaneously addressing pressing environmental concerns. Fundamental changes to current policies, such as a reduced interest rate for the Green Deal. Now, combined with a strategic refocusing of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) on tackling fuel poverty, would also give a much-needed boost to home retrofit efforts across the nation.
These adjustments could make energy-efficient upgrades more accessible and as well affordable. All for families struggling with high energy bills. The real game changer, however, would be for the Government to back energy efficiency initiatives with substantial infrastructure funds.
This investment would definitely create a comprehensive programme that not only seeks to transform the UK’s cold and draughty homes into warm, comfortable living spaces. Yet, it also has the potential to generate thousands of jobs for skilled workers in the construction and energy sectors, ultimately making additional revenue for the Treasury.
