VW ID Buzz 2025: Test Drive Results

Test Drive Results: 2025 VW ID Buzz โ€“ Pro S Plus 4MOTION

I finally got my hands on the long-awaited 2025 VW ID Buzz Pro S Plus 4MOTION. Let me tell youโ€”this electric reincarnation of the iconic hippie van delivers both nostalgia and sustainability. All in one uniquely styled package!

First Impressions and Green Performance

The moment I slid behind the wheel of the VW ID Buzz: so excited. So with the AWD Pro S Plus 4MOTION model about $69K I felt the perfect blend of past and future. With its 282 hp electric motor delivering a surprising 413 lb-ft of torque. For this 5,997-pound van isn’t your grandparents’ sluggish Bus. This puppy sprints to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds.

What impressed me most was the efficiency. During real-world driving, I saw about 2.7 miles per kWh, which aligns with its EPA rating of 90/75/83 mpg-e city/highway/total. For green enthusiasts like us, that’s significant progress for a vehicle of this size and utility.

Range and Charging โ€“ The Green Living Reality Check

Let’s talk rangeโ€”always my top concern for practical EV living. The VW ID Buzz Pro S Plus 4MOTION offers 239 miles AWD versions in ECO. On a road-trip range test at 70 mph, it managed an impressive 238 miles in AWD. The test was all ECO MODE and above its EPA rating. That’s something many EVs struggle with but it’s 91 kWh.

The charging capabilities are where the Buzz truly shines for eco-conscious road trippers. It can handle up to 200 kW DC fast charging, getting from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes. That’s in warm conditions but this was a freezing test. It took an hour to fast charge.

During my test, I appreciated the preconditioning digital dash showing real-time top kW charging capacity based on battery temperature. Now this is definitely a feature I wish more EVs would implement!

Driving Dynamics โ€“ Surprisingly Un-Bus-Like

I expected the VW ID Buzz to drive like, well, a bus! I was pleasantly surprised to discover it handles more like a lower-riding crossover. The low center of gravity (thanks to that floor-mounted battery) is ok but it’s a tell vehicle. So with the responsive steering makes it genuinely fun on winding roads.

Yes, there’s some body roll. That’s given with its 76.2 inches height. Yet , the Buzz feels confident through corners. The regenerative braking is well-calibrated, though I missed having a one-pedal driving mode that would maximize efficiency and range.

Interior Space and Sustainability for VW ID Buzz

The seven-passenger layout with three rows offers tremendous versatility. I love how the VW ID Buzz designed the space with sustainable family living in mindโ€”USB-C ports throughout. Also the clever storage solutions, and thoughtful touches like available soft storage bins.

But, I was hoping for more eco-friendly interior materials. While comfortable and well-designed, VW should have pushed harder to incorporate more recycled and sustainable materials. Especially to truly embrace the green ethos the original Bus represented.

Tech and Interface โ€“ Room for Improvement

Here’s where my enthusiasm cooled slightly. The 12.9-inch center screen looks great but requires too much menu-diving for common functions. As a green tech advocate, I appreciate digital controls that reduce physical components, but they need to be intuitive!

The route planner also disappointed me by only suggesting Electrify America chargers. That’s a serious limitation for EV road trippers who need flexibility in charging networks.

Value for Green Enthusiasts

Starting at $59,995 and climbing to nearly $70,000 for fully-loaded AWD models, the ID Buzz isn’t cheap. But compared to other three-row EVs like the Kia EV9, it offers unique styling and that intangible cool factor. One that many green-minded consumers value.

The Green Living Guy Verdict of the VW ID BUZZ 2025

The 2025 VW ID Buzz delivers on its promise of reinventing an icon for the electric age. While its range was not what I expected (lower), I’d say it’s better for a family hauler. Now I will say overall its efficiency, charging speed, and joyful driving dynamics are great. It’s making it a compelling package for eco-conscious families and adventure seekers.

Is it perfect? No. But it means the bold, personality-filled EVs we need to accelerate adoption. It’s a conversation starter that happens to be practical, efficient, and genuinely fun. That’s exactly what we need to make sustainable transportation irresistible!
