Elon Musk on Running Tesla Motors and SpaceX to Business Week

The PayPal founder wants to develop the technologies necessary to make life multiplanetary—while running two large companies at the same time
As told to Diane Brady
I’ve always wanted to be part of something that would radically change the world. In 1995, that was the Internet, which led to PayPal. After it sold, I wanted to create a low-cost Mars mission that would get people excited about space travel. The idea was to land a vehicle with a greenhouse on Mars and establish life there. The problem was finding a rocket. It would have cost about half a trillion dollars for one mission; rockets are not reusable. To make life multiplanetary, you need a transport system that’s fully and rapidly reusable. That would lead to a dramatic reduction in costs. In 2002, I started SpaceX to solve those problems.

A digital infographic titled “UK Goes All-In on Energy Efficiency and Product Ratings,” featuring five sections with icons and brief summaries about rising energy prices, new labeling legislation, ENERGY STAR-style ratings, A+ to G product efficiency labels, and the benefits of a greener economy.

UK Energy Efficiency Label to Help Save You Money

From 20 June consumers will see a new energy saving rating label when buying TVs, washing machines, dishwashers and fridge freezers to help make the right choice on what product is best for the environment.
And to raise awareness of the new rating system Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman has launched a campaign to help consumers choose the most efficient product which will save them money and lower their carbon footprint.
UK consumers are less likely to buy energy efficient appliances than others in Europe1 and the new campaign is designed to inform consumers of changes to these labels ahead of them becoming mandatory from 20 June 2011.

Cheaper offshore wind farms in sight for Denmark

The Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy published a report compiled by Deloitte indicating that the cost of building and operating offshore wind farms costs have come down dramatically in recent years.
Also being released is a report about the guidelines for building coastal wind turbines and an updated version of where future offshore wind farms will be built. Taken together, these three publications can serve as the foundation for the country’s continued expansion of offshore wind power.
The Deloitte report, based on the 2010 tender for Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, is an analysis of how competition in the offshore wind power area can be increased, and a lower consumer price achieved. The study concludes that there is broad support for the Danish tender model among relevant parties, just as the process of working with Danish authorities and connecting to the power grid were viewed positively by potential investors in Danish offshore wind farms. But the report also found that inflexible guidelines in the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm tender contributed to a higher settlement price. One example singled out by the report was the threat of drastic fines and short deadlines. Moreover, the tender also occurred at a time when the production of wind turbines and foundations could not keep pace with increasing demand, particularly in Germany and the United Kingdom.

Clean Energy Coal State’s Transition to Renewables

The Sierra Club announced today that this past weekend, the Washington State Senate approved a landmark agreement between the Sierra Club, Governor Chris Gregoire and TransAlta to phase out the state’s massive 1600MW coal plant between 2020 and 2025. This agreement continues Washington’s transition away from dirty coal to clean energy. With growing pressure from the public (including environmental groups, clean energy advocates, health professionals, students and the faith community) to move away from dirty coal, Governor Gregoire convened a group of stakeholders to discuss ways to transition the state off of coal. The agreement approved by the Senate on Saturday (formally Senate Bill 5769), is the result of those meetings.
“This agreement reflects a reasonable and thoughtful approach to a complex situation,” said Doug Howell, Washington Representative for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign. “Retiring this plant will protect the families and national parks that have for four decades been choking on this plant’s pollution. The orderly retirement will also ensure that the Centralia community will be protected during the transition away from coal.
