Environmental Leaders to AEP: What’s Your Number?

Source: Natural Resources Defense Council
National environmental groups the Natural Resources Defense Council, Environmental Defense Fund and Sierra Club are launching a new campaign today that challenges American Electric Power (AEP) to publicly name the number of lives it wants Congress to sacrifice to give AEP and other polluters delays and rollbacks of national limits on toxic air pollution.
While other utilities are investing in technology and jobs to clean up toxic air pollution from coal-fired power plants and meet new national pollution standards on time, AEP is promoting on Capitol Hill a sweeping, 56-page bill it drafted to weaken and delay federal clean air standards. AEP lobbyists wrote the bill, dubbed it the Electric Power Regulatory Coordination Act of 2011, and then went looking for lawmakers to sponsor it.
Columbus, Ohio-based AEP is one of the largest emitters of toxic air pollution in the country. In 2008, AEP emitted more mercury, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide pollution than any other American utility.

Witricity Wireless Charging Revolutionizes EVs

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has entered into a technological collaboration agreement with Massachusetts, United States based WiTricity Corporation* concerning the practical application of automotive wireless charging systems and the promotion of their widespread use. TMC plans to participate in a WiTricity capital increase.
WiTricity’s charging technology uses resonance, which allows charging without direct contact and is more efficient than electromagnetic-induction, another wireless technology—but one that requires contact—that is starting to come of age in mobile phone and other chargers. TMC believes that resonance wireless charging is suitable for automobiles and aims for its early practical use.
The collaboration is aimed to accelerate development and eventual implementation of wireless charging for automobiles. The charging of a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle could be as simple and convenient as parking near an embedded charger at a home or in a parking facility.

Electricity Family: Reducing Emissions for a Climate-Smart Lifestyle

Just over three months into their “One Tonne Life” the Lindell family members from Hässelby have made considerable progress on their journey towards a climate-smart lifestyle. The family members have reduced their emissions by 64 percent to 2.6 tonnes per person per year, compared with the 7.3 tonnes with which they started when the project got under way in January.
“One Tonne Life” is a project in which A-hus, Vattenfall and Volvo Car Corporation together with their specialist partners ICA and Siemens created the pre-requisites for a climate-smart household. The challenge faced by the Lindell test family, consisting of father Nils, mother Alicja and children Hannah and Jonathan is to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions to one tonne per person per year. This corresponds to the level that will likely be necessary if we are to avoid disastrous climate change.
For six months, the Lindells leave behind their 1970s family home and their almost ten year old cars and switch to a brand-new climate-smart wooden villa built by A-hus and a battery-powered Volvo C30 Electric. Vattenfall supplies the household with renewable electricity, innovative energy technology and energy coaching. ICA and Siemens are the project’s specialist partners in the areas of food and household appliances.

Electric Roads: Could You Drive Coast to Coast Without Stopping?

By txchnologist
We ask a lot of our cars – heat me, cool me, be silent, be comfy, be exciting and, increasingly, propel me without costly and polluting gasoline. It’s the latter request that confounds, since batteries, the most obvious replacements for gas, are heavy and have limited energy storage.
But what if the energy storage burden was shifted from our overworked cars to the road?
Researchers at the Energy Dynamics Laboratory at Utah State University are working on just such a solution, called electrified roads.
