Green Mountain Energy Trees: A Greener New York

Green Mountain Energy Helps Trees Grow Across New York City

Planting the Future—One Tree at a Time

Green Mountain Energy Company isn’t just selling clean electricity. It’s helping to grow a greener New York—literally. Through its innovative “Green Mountain Energy Sun Club,” the company recently announced it will fund the planting of 100 trees across all five boroughs of New York City.

The initiative partners with MillionTreesNYC, a public-private effort to plant one million trees across the city by 2017. For Green Mountain, the project is about more than beautifying neighborhoods. It’s about reducing carbon, improving air quality, and giving back to the environment that sustains us.

A Citywide Commitment

The tree-planting will happen in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Locations include underserved communities, public spaces, and schoolyards where new trees will bring both shade and oxygen.

According to Green Mountain Energy, these trees are expected to offset over 37,000 pounds of CO₂ annually. That’s roughly the amount of carbon absorbed by a car driving 40,000 miles each year.

It’s a small change with big impact—and it aligns with the company’s long-term sustainability mission.

Sun Club Members Make It Possible

This entire donation was made possible by the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club. The program allows customers to make voluntary contributions to fund local renewable energy and environmental projects.

Rather than just buying green energy, Sun Club members are directly investing in their communities. In this case, their dollars are going straight into the soil—supporting the growth of New York’s urban forest.

According to the company, Sun Club has funded projects in several states. From solar panels at nature centers to clean water initiatives, the focus remains the same: use energy to empower people and the planet.

More Than Just a Tree

Trees do more than provide shade. They cool down streets, absorb pollutants, reduce stormwater runoff, and serve as a home for birds and pollinators. In cities, they also create visual relief, lower stress levels, and raise property values.

MillionTreesNYC estimates that for every dollar invested in urban trees, cities see $5.60 in public benefits—from cleaner air to lower healthcare costs.

So Green Mountain’s support isn’t just generous—it’s smart, sustainable urban planning.

A Natural Extension of Their Mission

For Green Mountain Energy, this initiative is a natural extension of their company values. As one of the oldest renewable energy retailers in the U.S., Green Mountain has always emphasized environmental responsibility alongside business growth.

Their NYC customers already receive 100% pollution-free electricity. Now, those same customers are helping plant trees that will amplify the climate benefits of clean energy.

It’s a closed loop: renewable power prevents pollution, and newly planted trees remove the emissions still lingering in the atmosphere.

NYC Leads by Example with Green Mountain Energy Trees

This project also underscores New York City’s leadership on green infrastructure. Through MillionTreesNYC, the city has already planted hundreds of thousands of trees. With corporate partners like Green Mountain joining in, that number is set to grow even faster.

And as urban areas worldwide face rising temperatures, increased pollution, and growing populations, this effort shows what’s possible when public and private sectors align around sustainability.

In the heart of the concrete jungle, it turns out the future is still very green.
