Honda’s Green Revolution: Zero Waste, Maximum Impact Manufacturing Meets Sustainability Honda achieves a remarkable milestone in October 2011. Ten North American facilities reach zero waste

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) commended Honda in its 9th annual report, the 2011 Global 500 Report, which analyzes the responses of the world’s 500 largest companies to a CDP questionnaire regarding the company’s strategies and corporate governance to address climate change and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Honda was recognized for its comprehensive information disclosure and listed as one of only 52 companies in the CDP’s “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index” (CDLI) with the highest score among all Japanese companies included in the survey. The CDLI features companies which have demonstrated the most professional approach to corporate governance regarding the disclosure of climate change information.

Honda Engineering North America, Inc.’s Powertrain Division in Anna, Ohio, and Honda Canada, Inc.’s new head office in Markham, Ontario, have each earned LEED “green-building” certification, bringing to eleven the number of LEED-certifiedHonda facilities in North America, the most LEED-certified buildings of any automaker. Honda Engineering North America’s Anna facility has earned LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, while Honda Canada’s head office has earned LEED-Gold certification from the Canada Green Building Council.
“Our environmental efforts extend well beyond the products we make and include the facilities that support Honda’s manufacturing, R&D, sales and service operations across North America,” said David Strelow, facilities manager for the Anna Engine Plant, who was involved in the construction of the new facility. “This is part and parcel of our commitment to being good neighbors in the communities where we do business and good stewards of the environment and our finite natural resources.”
During construction of the expanded facility, the company used locally sourced materials where possible and diverted more than 185 cubic yards of construction material from landfills, recycling or reusing more than 50 percent of total construction materials. The expanded facility is now equipped with cool-roof materials, more energy-efficient lighting controls and advanced indoor-air-quality management systems.

“Customers are prioritizing fuel economy above every other trait when they make most vehicle purchases,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “Ford is meeting people’s needs by offering a family of fuel-efficient vehicles – from hybrids to electrics to traditional gasoline-powered cars – packed with class-leading technology, giving customers both exciting and greener driving choices.”
“Expanding the availability of EcoBoost technology in the all-new Ford Escape will give customers a great range of choices for the fuel efficiency and performance they want in a small SUV,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Powertrain Engineering. “This advanced technology in the new Escape delivers on our commitment to provide class-leading fuel efficiency in every new Ford product.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has tentatively determined that there are adequate facilities around Lake Ontario for boats to pump out their sewage, allowing the establishment of a “no discharge zone” for 3,675 square miles of the lake, its tributaries and bays, and 326 miles of shoreline that comprise the New York State portion of the lake. The no discharge zone was proposed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. A no-discharge zone means that boats are completely banned from discharging sewage into the water. Boaters must instead dispose of their sewage at specially-designated pump-out stations. This action is part of a joint EPA/New York State strategy to eliminate the discharge of sewage from boats into the state’s waterways. Discharges of sewage from boats can contain harmful levels of pathogens and chemicals such as formaldehyde, phenols and chlorine, which have a negative impact on water quality, pose a risk to people’s health and impair marine life. EPA is encouraging public comment on its proposed approval until November 4, 2011.
