Some gets trucked to landfills, some to illegal dumping grounds and left to scatter, more is just recklessly discarded joining tons of the toxic stuff already cluttering our waterways. The latest research unmistakably proves that plastic waste toxins are being fed right back to us. It’s time to start producing less plastic trash – for our own health’s sake.
THE PROBLEM WITH THROWAWAY CULTURE? THERE’S NO ‘AWAY’.
Like it or not, we are the throwaway generation. We have produced more plastic in the last 10 years than we did in the whole of the previous century. We are all mucking-in to create a tidal wave of this practical but poisonous mulch, with nowhere for it to flow. The problem is, there is no ‘away’ for today’s throwaway culture.
No one has been clearing up after us either. Strangely enough, there are no ocean fairies miraculously retrieving derelict fishing gear every night or running to catch a ton of wind-swept ice-cream wrappers after a good summer.
All the plastic trash we leave in our tracks may be ebbed and flowed from sight or mind, but the problem stays with us for longer than we care to think.
The most common plastic is a form of petroleum plastic; a material designed to last forever. Yet, we use this as packaging for items consumed immediately or products with a short life that are considered trash by us in no time.
In conclusion, this throwaway mentality is a relatively new fad. Just a generation ago in fact. Back when they we created products that were treasured for decades, even lifetimes. Watch any of the trending period TV dramas for handsome proof of this. You’ll see the kitchen staff un-package perishables from reusable or recyclable materials like glass, metals, wood and paper.
