Mazda CX-90 PHEV AWD Skyactiv 2026: Test Drive Results

Mazda CX-90 PHEV AWD Skyactiv

Mazda is currently undergoing a massive transformation. For years, they were the “zoom-zoom” brand for enthusiasts on a budget. However, today they are aiming directly for the luxury crown. Consequently, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV AWD Skyactiv is their most ambitious shot at the big leagues. This is a three-row SUV that looks like it belongs in a driveway next to a BMW or a Volvo.

I recently took this plug-in hybrid for a spin to see if it lives up to the hype. Specifically, I wanted to know if a heavy family hauler can truly deliver on the promise of green living without sacrificing performance. Consequently, here is what I found during my week with the CX-90.

A Design That Commands Attention

First, let’s talk about the curb appeal. Mazda calls their design language “Kodo,” or “Soul of Motion.” In fact, it works incredibly well here. The CX-90 features a long hood and a rear-biased cabin. This gives it a classic “coke bottle” silhouette that you usually only see on high-end European SUVs.

Furthermore, the paint quality is top-notch. If you opt for the Soul Red Crystal or the Artisan Red, the car literally glows in the sunlight. Similarly, the chrome accents are tasteful rather than gaudy. It looks expensive. Therefore, if you are looking to impress the neighbors while picking up the kids from soccer, this car hits the mark.

Stepping Into the “Premium” Zone

Inside, the story gets even better. Mazda didn’t just throw some leather at the seats and call it a day. Instead, they used Nappa leather and unique Kakenui stitching on the dashboard. This stitching creates a “hanging” effect that feels very Japanese and very high-end.

Moreover, the layout is refreshing. While many brands are moving toward giant, distracting touchscreens, Mazda keeps things tactile. You get actual buttons for the climate control. There is a physical volume knob. Consequently, you can keep your eyes on the road instead of digging through sub-menus.

The cabin fits seven or eight passengers depending on your configuration. In addition, the third row is actually usable for adults on shorter trips. Specifically, the panoramic sunroof makes the whole space feel airy and open. For more detailed images of modern luxury interiors, you can check out our image-sitemap-13.xml.

The Powertrain: Surprising Speed

Now, let’s get into the greasy bits. The 2026 CX-90 PHEV uses a 2.5L 4-cylinder Skyactiv engine. This is paired with a 68-kW electric motor. Together, they produce a stout 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Naturally, you might expect a hybrid SUV to feel a bit sluggish. However, this thing is surprisingly quick. In fact, it hits 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. That is actually faster than the version with the turbocharged inline-six engine!

Furthermore, the power delivery is immediate thanks to the electric motor. When you floor it, the AWD system grips the pavement and launches you forward. Therefore, merging onto the highway is never a stressful event. In addition, the i-Activ AWD system is rear-biased. Consequently, the car feels more like a sports sedan than a lumbering bus when you go around a corner.

Electric Range and Real-World Efficiency

As a green living advocate, the “Plug-In” part is what I care about most. The 2026 CX-90 PHEV comes with a 17.8-kWh battery. According to the EPA, this gives you about 26 miles of all-electric range.

Is 26 miles enough? Well, it depends on your commute. If you work close to home and have a Level 2 charger, you might never use a drop of gas during the week. Specifically, you can charge the battery from 20% to 80% in about 90 minutes.

However, during my test drive, I noticed that the range can be sensitive. In colder weather, that 26-mile estimate can drop significantly. Furthermore, the transitions between the electric motor and the gas engine can sometimes feel a bit unrefined. Sometimes there is a small “thump” when the gas engine kicks in. Nevertheless, seeing a 56 MPGe rating on a vehicle this size is a huge win for sustainability. You can see more about our commitment to these metrics in our news-sitemap.xml.

Handling and Drive Quality

Mazda included something called Kinematic Posture Control (KPC). Basically, this system applies a tiny bit of brake pressure to the inner rear wheel during cornering. Consequently, it pulls the body of the car down and keeps it flat.

Therefore, the CX-90 handles “twisties” with more grace than most of its competitors. The steering is heavy and communicative. However, there is a trade-off. To get that sporty handling, Mazda tuned the suspension to be quite firm. Specifically, if you have the 21-inch wheels, you will definitely feel the potholes. In fact, some might find the ride a bit too stiff for a “luxury” family car.

Practicality and Towing

Let’s talk about the “Utility” in Sport Utility Vehicle. The CX-90 PHEV is rated to tow up to 3,500 lbs. While that is decent, keep in mind that the non-hybrid Turbo S model can handle 5,000 lbs. Therefore, if you have a heavy boat, the PHEV might not be your first choice.

In terms of cargo, the space is competitive. With the third row folded flat, you have plenty of room for Costco runs or camping gear. In addition, the i-Activsense safety suite comes standard. This includes:

  • Smart Brake Support
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist

Consequently, you feel very secure behind the wheel. For a look at how we document these features, visit our image-sitemap-15.xml.

Is the Mazda CX-90 PHEV AWD a Right Green Choice?

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV occupies a unique spot in the market. It isn’t a full EV like the Kia EV9, but it offers more style and driving soul than the Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

Naturally, there are some quirks. The 8-speed automatic transmission can be a bit jerky at low speeds. Furthermore, the infotainment system is controlled by a rotary dial rather than a touchscreen, which has a bit of a learning curve.

However, the pros far outweigh the cons. You are getting a legitimate luxury experience for thousands less than a German equivalent. Most importantly, you are getting the ability to drive on pure electricity for your daily errands. In fact, that is the core of green living: making sustainable choices that still fit your lifestyle.

Final Verdict on the Mazda CX-90 PHEV AWD

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV AWD Skyactiv is a bold statement. It proves that you don’t have to give up performance or beauty to be environmentally conscious. While the real-world electric range might be modest for some, the overall package is incredibly compelling.

If you have a short commute and want a premium SUV that stands out from the crowd, this is it. Specifically, it offers a level of craftsmanship that is rare in this price bracket. Consequently, Mazda has successfully transitioned from a budget brand to a serious luxury contender.
