Let’s hear it for homegrown Michigan energy. For Ford Motor Company is making significant strides toward sustainability. That’s especially by teaming up with Detroit Edison, Xtreme Power, and the state of Michigan. That’s to establish one of the largest solar power generation systems at the Michigan Assembly Plant. This initiative is part of Ford’s broader strategy to transform its facilities and production processes to be more environmentally friendly.

Solar Power and Energy Storage
The Michigan energy project involves installing a 500-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel system. That’s integrated with a 750-kilowatt energy storage facility capable of storing two million watt-hours of energy. This setup will not only power the production of fuel-efficient vehicles like the all-new Focus and Focus Electric. Yet it also supports the manufacturing of next-generation hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The energy storage system will recharge during off-peak hours, providing cost-effective power during peak times and reducing demand on the grid.
Collaborative Efforts and Economic Impact
This ambitious project is supported by a $3 million investment from Detroit Edison’s SolarCurrents program, a $2 million grant from the Michigan Public Service Commission, and approximately $800,000 from Ford. These efforts aim to increase the demand for renewable technologies and attract green jobs to Michigan. The solar energy system is expected to save an estimated $160,000 per year in energy costs, underscoring the economic and environmental benefits of such initiatives.
Ford’s Commitment to Sustainability
Ford’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond this project. Since 2008, the company has sourced renewable electricity for its Cologne, Germany plant, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. However, renewable energy currently supplies only 3% of Ford’s global energy needs, highlighting the potential for further growth in this area.
Related Initiatives
