BP Oil Disaster Anniversary Marked by Impacts and Inaction – NRDC

It’s been one year since BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and caused the worst oil spill in U.S. history, killing 11 workers, spewing some 170 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, and tarnishing more than 1,000 miles of coastline.
NRDC experts have compiled a year-end analysis of the oil disaster entitled The BP Oil Disaster at One Year: A Straightforward Assessment of What We Know, What We Don’t, and What Questions Need to be Answered.
The report explores the following six aspects of the disaster a year later: Understanding the Science, Assessing Impacts on Marine Mammals, Making the Most of the Natural Resources Damage Assessment, Identifying and Addressing Public Health Concerns, Grasping the Regional Economic Impacts and Rising to Meet the Challenge.

GM Volt Production Targets 120,000 Units

Source: Bloomberg
General Motors Co. Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson plans to double the 2012 production capacity for the Chevrolet Volt to 120,000 as he works to boost the plug- in hybrid’s sales, said two people familiar with the matter.
Volt output this year may increase to 25,000 from an original plan of 10,000, Akerson said earlier this month. GM now is working with suppliers to raise 2012 capacity from an earlier target of 60,000. It may not build that many if parts aren’t available or demand isn’t strong enough, said the people, who didn’t want to be named because the plans are private.
Akerson, who became CEO in September, wants to sell more of the $41,000 Volt and is pushing to use its Voltec gasoline- electric drive system for models sold by other GM brands. Akerson has said he wants GM to have more fuel-efficient models ready for a possible increase in oil prices to $120 a barrel.

Switch Lighting™ Introduces brightest Amazing Looking LED Replacement Bulb

Switch Lighting, the only company with the closest alternative to incandescent-quality light, announced today a brand new technology that produces the brightest warm light LED replacement bulb available. Using their “City of Light”™ technology, the bulb creates a self-cooling environment inside, allowing maximum brightness with fewer LEDs. With this technology, Switch Lighting is bringing to market the first true 75 watt equivalent warm white LED replacement bulb at an affordable price.
“The LED lighting market is being redefined—people want sustainable, energy-efficient light sources without a compromise in incandescent light quality or design,” says Boris Lipkin, CEO of Switch Lighting. “Switch bulbs can be used just like a regular bulb—in all directions, in almost every light fixture and with most any dimmer,” added Mr. Lipkin.
Switch is designing their LED bulbs to meet Cradle to Cradle® principles—continuously and cost-effectively recovering all materials from the used light bulbs and safely biodegrading or recycling them.

Digital graphic announcing the FTC’s proposed updates to the Green Guides, highlighting eco-marketing reform.

Green Guides: The Fight Against Greenwashing

The Federal Trade Commission today proposed revisions to the guidance that it gives marketers to help them avoid making misleading environmental claims. The proposed changes are designed to update the Guides and make them easier for companies to understand and use.
The changes to the “Green Guides” include new guidance on marketers’ use of product certifications and seals of approval, “renewable energy” claims, “renewable materials” claims, and “carbon offset” claims. The FTC is seeking public comments on the proposed changes until December 10, 2010, after which it will decide which changes to make final.
“In recent years, businesses have increasingly used ‘green’ marketing to capture consumers’ attention and move Americans toward a more environmentally friendly future. But what companies think green claims mean and what consumers really understand are sometimes two different things,” said FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz. “The proposed updates to the Green Guides will help businesses better align their product claims with consumer expectations.”
The Green Guides were first issued in 1992 to help marketers ensure that the claims they are making are true and substantiated. The Guides were revised in 1996 and 1998. The guidance they provide includes: 1) general principles that apply to all environmental marketing claims; 2) how consumers are likely to interpret particular claims and how marketers can substantiate these claims; and 3) how marketers can qualify their claims to avoid deceiving consumers.
