EPA Honors Electric School Bus Champion John Clements

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) honors longtime electric school bus and transportation leader John Clements. He was essentially the one helping push electric school buses into the mainstream.

Clements served as Director of Transportation for Kings Canyon Unified School District in Reedley, California. During his career, he became a major advocate for zero-emission school transportation across the San Joaquin Valley.

The EPA recognized Clements with its Environmental Champion Award for his work deploying battery-electric school buses and electric refrigerated lunch delivery trucks. He also helped advance cleaner transportation programs throughout California. (The Green Living Guy)

Clements spent 39 years working in school transportation in California’s San Joaquin Valley.

However, he did more than manage buses.

He pushed school districts to rethink how they moved students.

Instead of relying only on traditional diesel technology, Clements supported cleaner fuels, electric vehicles and new transportation strategies designed to reduce harmful emissions.

That effort mattered in the San Joaquin Valley.

Electric School Buses Protect Children

School buses perform one of the most important transportation jobs in America.

They carry children.

Consequently, reducing emissions around schools can deliver direct public-health benefits.

Diesel engines produce particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and other pollutants. Children can face exposure while riding buses, waiting near loading areas and spending time around school transportation facilities.

Electric school buses change that equation.

Battery-electric buses eliminate tailpipe emissions. Therefore, schools can reduce diesel exhaust around students, drivers and surrounding neighborhoods.

That was central to Clements’ work.

Kings Canyon Pushes Clean Transportation Forward

Kings Canyon Unified School District had already experimented with alternative fuels.

Clements wanted to take the next step.

Electric school buses and electric delivery trucks gave the district another way to demonstrate clean transportation technology in everyday service.

Rather than simply discussing zero-emission transportation, the district put vehicles on the road.

That distinction matters.

Demonstration fleets provide real-world information about range, charging, maintenance, operating costs and driver experience. Moreover, successful projects can give neighboring school districts confidence to consider similar technology.

EPA Recognizes Clean Transportation Leadership

The EPA presented Clements with the award during the Northern California Alternative Car Expo in Richmond, California.

Jared Blumenfeld, then EPA Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest, highlighted the connection between diesel exhaust and public health.

The agency specifically recognized Clements for reducing school transportation emissions while helping protect children and communities from harmful particulate pollution. (The Green Living Guy)

Still, Clements’ influence reached beyond one school district.

He worked with clean transportation organizations and government agencies, including the EPA West Coast Collaborative Public Fleets Workgroup and California Air Resources Board programs supporting hybrid and zero-emission trucks and buses.

Those partnerships helped connect school transportation operators with regulators, technology providers and clean-air programs.

Electric School Buses are Becoming Clean-Energy Platforms

Electric school buses have another advantage.

They operate on predictable schedules.

Most buses run routes in the morning and afternoon. Then they spend long periods parked at a depot.

That operating pattern creates opportunities for managed charging.

As renewable energy and battery storage expand, electric school bus fleets can increasingly become part of a larger clean-energy system.

Meanwhile, districts can reduce petroleum consumption and local exhaust emissions at the same time.

One Transportation Director Helped Move an Industry

Clements’ EPA recognition represented more than an award for one transportation professional.

It showed how local leadership can accelerate larger technological changes.

A school transportation director may oversee buses, routes, drivers and maintenance. Yet those decisions can also influence air quality, energy use and climate emissions for decades.

Clements understood that connection early.

He championed cleaner buses before electric school transportation became the major national movement it is today.

That makes his work especially significant.

The electric school bus transition starts with technology. However, technology alone does not transform transportation.

People do.

And advocates like John Clements helped put electric school buses on the road long before they became a familiar part of America’s clean transportation future.
