Clean Cars Would Cut Pollution, Save Americans $66 Billion at the Gas Pump This Summer

Source: Environment America
As the average price of gas creeps closer to $4 per gallon and Americans brace for further price increases, a new Environment America Research & Policy Center report finds that more fuel efficient cars would save the average American family $513 at the gas pump this summer alone. The report was released as the Obama administration is developing new fuel efficiency and global warming pollution standards for cars and light trucks.
“Americans shouldn’t have to spend their summers worrying about how they will afford to drive, let alone whether their driving is polluting the air their kids breathe, or whether their beaches will be safe from oil spills like last summer’s BP Deepwater Horizon disaster. President Obama can help solve all these problems in one fell swoop by helping America to get off oil. Ensuring our cars get 60 miles per gallon would be a bold step in that direction,” said Margie Alt, Executive Director of Environment America. “Our report shows that burning less oil in more efficient cars will also mean burning less cash, saving Americans $66 billion in one summer alone. That extra cash in our families’ pockets will mean enjoying that drive to the shore, arriving confident that the beaches will be clean, and having enough money left over to book a hotel and stick around for a week to enjoy the surf.”

Sustainable School Practices for a Greener Future

Source: National Wildlife Federation
Savannah Country Day School in Georgia was named the nation’s first Green Flag Eco-School in a ceremony yesterday, signifying exceptional achievement in ‘greening’ school grounds, operations and curricula. The school achieved this honor through a combination of excellence by “green” management of its facilities and grounds, providing opportunities for outdoor education and by integrating environmental learning throughout its curricula.
The Eco-Schools USA program, which is hosted by National Wildlife Federation, counts nearly 500 schools and some 205,000 students among its participants, but none has achieved the program’s highest honor, the Green Flag, until now.
“The Green Flag is special – and only awarded to those schools who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability and increasing environmental literacy for its students, faculty, and wider school community,” said Laura Hickey, Senior Director of Eco-Schools USA, on hand for the official flag-raising.
Also in attendance for the event were the City of Savannah’s Mayor Pro Tem, Edna Jackson, and Environmental Affairs Officer Laura Walker. Jackson congratulated the school and thanked cheering students and staff for helping to make Savannah a “Green City.”

Westchester Land Trust Completes Major Projects

Source: Westchester Land Trust
Westchester Land Trust has taken a big step toward helping protect the watershed of the Croton Reservoir system with the recent completion of conservation easements on 286 acres in Bedford and in the Putnam County town of Patterson.
The easements, on Burdick Farm, Jensen Farm and Tanrackin Farm, were donated by Beth and Bob Mancini, of Bedford.
The Mancinis, the donors of two previous easements in Bedford, have now protected more land with Westchester Land Trust – 345 acres – than any other individual conservation easement donor. At 164 acres, Jensen Farm is the largest easement ever donated by an individual to Westchester Land Trust.

Greenhouse LED Light for Energy Efficiency

Source: Lemnis Lighting
Koppert Cress, Europe’s largest micro vegetable nursery, placed another order today to use LED lighting in its greenhouse complex. This makes Koppert Cress the most energy-conserving greenhouse complex in the world. The nursery will be opening its doors to the general public during Kom in de Kas 2011.
A lot of work is currently being done to design the eight metre high greenhouse complex for the 21st century. A huge saving is being realised due to an optimum use of the latest techniques in the field of heat and cold pumps, LED lighting and solar collectors, giving Monster the most energy-conserving greenhouse complex in the world. The surplus energy is supplied to the nearby residential area. After a successful adoption of LED lighting in the ‘semi-closed’ greenhouse complex, Koppert Cress decided to further expand its greenhouses with LED lamps from Lemnis Lighting.

NYSERDA Helps Fordham University Obtain LEED® Gold from U.S. Green Building Council

Source: NYSERDA
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today commended Fordham University for obtaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®) Gold designation from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The recently constructed Rose Hill Dormitories in the Bronx are two, 83,500 square-foot buildings with multiple stories. Each dormitory was designed to optimize energy usage and performance and constructed according to environmentally sustainable building practices.
Fordham University obtained this recognition in part because of energy-efficient, green building measures that were supported by nearly $555,000 of NYSERDA incentives. This funding will help the University reduce energy costs by $174,000 annually with new high performance lighting and occupancy controls, high efficiency chillers and boilers, a heat recovery system and various other energy efficiency measures.
