Device can heat home, save money – Phys.org

Source: Phys.org and for the entire story!
Geothermal add-ons for heat pumps on the market today collect heat from the air or the ground. This new device uses a fluid that flows through a roof-mounted module to collect heat from the sun while an integrated solar cell generates electricity from the sun’s visible light.
“It’s a systems approach to making your home ultra-efficient because the device collects both solar energy and heat,” said David Carroll, Ph.D., director of the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials at Wake Forest. “Our solar-thermal device takes better advantage of the broad range of power delivered from the sun each day.”
Research showing the effectiveness of the device appears in the March issue of the peer-reviewed journal Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells.

Bolthouse Farms Solar Energy System Powers Food Production

Grimmway Enterprises Inc., the largest carrot grower in the world, is making its carrots green with Conergy USA. The solar experts completed the 230 kilowatt ground-mounted power system, featuring more than 1,000 solar modules, on one of Grimmway’s carrot farms located near Arvin, California. The installation will prevent the release of around 150,000 lbs of harmful CO2 greenhouse gas per year, reduce energy consumption by 40%and reduce the electric bill by 50%. This installation enforces the commitment of PG&E Clean and Green Awardee Grimmway to advance sustainability, conservation and energy efficiency.
Conergy System Services deliver a “Worry-Free Package” for Conergy solar installations. Conergy’s experts not only install on-site turn-key solar projects, but they also manage the planning and financing, project implementation, system monitoring, operation and on-going maintenance of the project for maximum performance. With this comprehensive technology and service package, Conergy offers yield insurance for its installations.
Only Conergy delivers solar energy systems from a single source. As a system manufacturer, Conergy produces all components for a solar installation and offers all services under one roof. With its modules, inverters and mounting systems, the solar expert creates Conergy System Technology, which is efficient and synchronized solar energy systems for private or commercial rooftops, as well as for multi-Megawatt Parks.

New Factory Will Create 600 Jobs Annual Production of More Than 250MW

Source: First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR)
First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) today announced it will build its new U.S. manufacturing center in Mesa, Ariz. First Solar will invest about $300 million in the factory, which will create approximately 600 jobs and will include four manufacturing lines with a capacity to produce more than 250 megawatts (MW) of advanced thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules per year. The new factory, in combination with First Solar’s recently expanded facility in Perrysburg, Ohio, will increase First Solar’s U.S. production capacity to more than 500MW per year.
Construction will begin in the second quarter of 2011 and is expected to last a year, creating an average of 400-500 construction jobs. Module shipments are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2012. The facility is located on a 135-acre site that was previously home to a General Motors vehicle testing facility and is designed to accommodate future expansion. The facility will include a 3MW rooftop solar installation as well as an extensive ground-mounted PV testing facility. The factory will utilize First Solar’s continuous manufacturing process which transforms a sheet of glass into a complete solar module in less than 2.5 hours, which contributes to the industry-leading energy payback time and low carbon footprint of systems utilizing First Solar’s thin-film modules.

First Solar PV Modules Available for 10-30 kW Commercial Solar Power Systems

Source: First Solar, Inc.
First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) today announced the availability of its industry-leading, thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules for use in 10-30 kilowatt (kW) PV systems, effective immediately.
Since its market debut in 2002, First Solar and its business partners have focused on commercial PV systems larger than 30 kW (DC). With the introduction of the latest, high-efficiency, First Solar Series 3 modules, as well as increasing demand for commercial systems below 30kW, First Solar is responding to customer demand by serving this growing market segment.
“Commercial rooftops in the 10-30kW range represent a multi-gigawatt market globally,” said TK Kallenbach, President of First Solar’s Components Business Group. “This expansion gives our customers additional flexibility to serve smaller and medium-sized commercial and industrial rooftops. It is a natural extension of our thin film module capability and allows our customers to continue to learn and apply innovative technology and installation techniques to a growing market.”

UNEP Pledged 1,297,343 Trees Planted to A Billion Acts of Green® in honor of Earth Day 2011

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) pledged the 1,297,343 trees planted on the week of Earth Day 2011 through its Billion Tree Campaign in support of A Billion Acts of Green®. A Billion Acts of Green® is a campaign initiated by Earth Day Network which mobilizes individuals, communities, and organizations around the world to undertake acts of environmental service and advocacy. Ever since the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has become the most widely celebrated non-religious holiday in the world, encouraging action and awareness about our planet’s limited resources. Tree plantings and other conservation activities have been a popular way for people of all ages, backgrounds, and situations to improve their local and global environment.
Trees play a crucial role and are fundamental components of the biodiversity that forms the foundation of all life. UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign was created with the goal to catalyze the pledging and planting of one billion trees as a way of giving public expression to the challenges of climate change and ecosystem degradation. Since its start, the Billion Tree Campaign has surpassed its original goal, with more than 11 billion trees planted around the world. Just as notably, on April 22, 2011, Earth Day, A Billion Acts of Green® surpassed 100 million Acts of Green, and is well on its way to reach one billion in time for the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20.
