The Green Living Guy looks awesome cruising on that YikeBike - truly a superhero of sustainable transportation! Isn't the YikeBike fascinating? I've been following this innovative electric folding bike since it made waves by grabbing that Guinness World Record for being the most compact electric bike. It's exactly the kind of game-changing tech that excites me as someone passionate about green transportation options! The way it folds up so tiny makes it perfect for urban commuters who need to hop between transit options. And at just 14kg for the aluminum version, it's ridiculously portable compared to traditional e-bikes.

Yikebike Design: A Revolution in Urban Mobility

YikeBike, the compact electric bike named by Time Magazine as one of the top inventions of 2009, has won the Supreme Award for Product Design and Gold Award for Consumer Product at the 2010 Best Design Awards. YikeBike also won first place in the International Design Awards “Urban Sustainable Design” category and has been included in the Guinness Book of World records as the most compact electric bike in the world.
The judges of the 2010 Best Design Awards, led by Professor Tony Parker, Head of Massey University’s Institute of Design for Industry and the Environment, said, “This radical piece of design has attracted a great deal of global attention, and no wonder. It takes typical urban commuting solutions, and turns them inside out. This contemporary penny-farthing is a game-changing idea and one where every component and detail has been designed from a single-minded perspective.”

Oceana Applauds U.S. Senate for Advancing Bill to Stop Seafood Fraud

The United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation today passed the Commercial Seafood Consumer Protection Act (S. 50), which if enacted into law would help stop seafood fraud. Below is a statement in response to today’s decision from Oceana’s campaign director and federal policy director Beth Lowell.
“Oceana applauds the Senate committee for advancing this important piece of legislation. S.50 would be a first step to stopping seafood fraud in the United States. Seafood fraud is rampant and hurts our oceans, wallets and health.
Americans should be able to track one of their most popular foods – seafood. Consumers have a right to know what they are eating and where, when and how it was caught.

“National Conversation on Public Health and Chemical Exposures” Outlines 48 Recommendations to Ensure Chemical Safety for Americans

Even though Americans are exposed every day to potentially harmful chemicals, the U.S. government currently does not have in place a comprehensive system to protect the public in such situations.
However, the National Conversation on Public Health and Chemical Exposures is a collaboration of RESOLVE, a nonprofit consensus-building organization; the American Public Health Association; the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials; the National Association of County and City Health Officials; and others.
As part of their mission to advance the public’s health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) supported the National Conversation. Dozens of government agency, nonprofit and industry experts and thousands of members of the public were involved in developing the recommendations.

Department of Energy Announces up to $70 Million to Advance Technology and Reduce Cost of Geothermal Energy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In support of President Obama’s goal of generating 80% of the country’s electricity from clean energy sources by 2035, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced the availability of up to $70 million in new funding over three years for technology advancements in geothermal energy to accelerate development of this promising clean energy resource. Innovations in exploration technologies to locate geothermal energy resources and improvements in resource characterization, drilling, and reservoir engineering techniques will enable clean energy from geothermal sources to be a key contributor to the nation’s renewable energy supply. By targeting funding to research and develop these innovative technologies, the Department aims to reduce the upfront cost of geothermal energy systems, expand their use, and enable the United States to tap the huge potential of this renewable energy resource.
“By investing in geothermal technologies, we are also investing in our nation’s energy future and creating opportunities for energy innovation in the United States,” said Secretary Chu. “The United States remains a global leader in geothermal energy development, and we can leverage our experience to develop more energy here at home while increasing our competitiveness in the global clean energy economy.”
