Hazardous Waste Facility Issues Lead to Fine

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently fined a medical device manufacturing facility $30,000 for the improper management of hazardous waste at its Tucson facility.
Inspections at MRI Manufacturing and Research, Inc. in 2010 uncovered violations of federal standards governing the handling and storing of hazardous waste. In this case, the materials were industrial solvents used to manufacture medical devices, such as tubing for catheters. Among the violations were mislabeled or unlabeled containers, failure to provide proof of employee training and inadequate record keeping at a hazardous waste small quantity generator.
Under the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act program, hazardous substances must be stored, handled and disposed of using measures that safeguard public health and the environment.

America’s Great Outdoors Initiative : Nature for All

The Obama Administration today detailed how the President’s America’s Great Outdoors Initiative (AGO) is opening up access to lands and waters, restoring critical landscapes, reconnecting Americans to the natural world, and supporting thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic activity.
With the release of the 2011 America’s Great Outdoors Progress Report, 15 federal agencies outlined their combined conservation and recreation successes, including gains in youth employment, new trail designations, the creation of urban campgrounds, and historic investments in large landscapes such as the Everglades.
In addition to social, cultural and historic value, America’s outdoors provide vital jobs and economic benefits to communities across the country. For example, National Parks see more than 280 million visitors, generating $12 billion in visitor spending and supporting nearly 250,000 jobs.

Paradigm Project Speaks Out and Walks It Out For Greener Cooking Worldwide!

The Paradigm Project, led by father-and-son team Greg Spencer Sr. and Greg Spencer Jr., has been on a 136-mile walk from San Diego to LA carrying 50-pound bundles of wood on their backs today to raise awareness for the 3 billion people who currently cook over an open fire. Once the arrive at the finish line in LA, they will be constructing a replica of a traditional Kenyan hut, complete with a traditional cook stove inside. Attendees will have an opportunity to experience the severity of the issue (the smoke is equal to smoking 40 cigarettes per day) by entering the hut. They will also have video from their time in Kenya on display.
Traditional open-fire cook stoves create severe environmental, economic and humanitarian issues. Forests are disappearing, women and children are dying from smoke inhalation and families are spending vast amounts of time and money just to cook. While our society tends to rate stoves lower on the list of issues that are important to support, smoke inhalation kills more than 1.6 million people every year, with women and children in the disproportionate majority, and is the number one killer of children under the age of 5 (more than AIDS, malaria, malnutrition and water-borne disease). Support America Recycles Day This Year

Did you know that Americans dispose enough paper and plastic products each year to circle the world 300 times and Americans dispose approximately 1 billion plastic shopping bags each year? How about if we all pitched in and recycled, it could create more than 1 million green jobs?
According to the Clean Air Council, these facts are true. Recycling is not only good for the planet, it’s good for our health too. Recycling reduces the amount of pollution and carbon dioxide we breathe, keeps our water clear of harmful pollutants and chemicals and reduces the risk and exposure of serious health conditions caused by toxic waste, such as certain cancers and terminal diseases.
If you are wondering how you can pitch in to better your health and preserve the planet for future generations to come— your answer is here. Gather your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers to brainstorm an America Recycles Day event on November 15th 2011. If you are in college, ask your university to hold a campus-wide event that encourages students to recycle. Ask them to provide students with useful information about where the campus recycling bins are, as well as their policies on what you can and cannot recycle on campus.
