Twenty-six U.S. teachers are going to Costa Rica through the Toyota International Teacher Program from November 19 – December 3, 2011. This teacher program allows the teachers to travel from across the country to Costa Rica, Galapagos, Japan and South Africa to complete a two-week study tour during which they learn about the environmental challenges each country faces.
The program to Costa Rica, a country dedicated to protecting its natural resources, will allow to explore environmental and cultural preservation, biodiversity and sustainability. This includes site visits, discussions, lectures and hands-on activities (meet with local experts, visit schools, museums and the rainforest).
They will travel to San Jose, Guácimo, Sarapiquí and La Fortuna, to highlight the relationship between Costa Rican history, culture and the environment. They will visit sustainable agriculture projects at Earth University and engage in service projects at La Selva Biological Station, one of the most studied tropical rain forests in the world.
Westchester/Bronx Energy $mart Communities (E$C) partnered with the New York Solar Energy Industries Association (NYSEIA) to honor the organizations and individuals who continue to work tirelessly to further the progress of the New York Solar Jobs Act.

The number of surfers worldwide has been estimated at between 17 and 23 million. Centered around the sport, a multi-billion dollar industry has formed. Surfing is entirely based on enjoying nature, yet is so harmful to the environment. The entire surfing industry relies on a healthy environment in order to function. This is often overlooked however, and most surfing products are actually quite toxic to both humans and the environment.
Although surfers don’t require many pieces of equipment, the items they do use are disposable and unnatural. Every surfer needs a surfboard, often an entire collection of various shapes and sizes to best suit each wave condition. The most common method of producing boards starts using polyurethane foam “blanks”, which are sculpted by a shaper, then covered in fiberglass resin for strength and durability. All of the materials and processes used to create these boards are toxic and wasteful. An estimated 20% of the polyurethane foam needed to shape each board is wasted and inevitably ends up in landfills. With over 1,000 boards produced every day in Southern California alone, the wasted foam accumulates quickly.

The slow pace of economic recovery in our country has spawned the movement Occupy Wall Street, with images of protests in our daily news. Those of us promoting the cause of electric vehicles are holding our own nonviolent event this month, called National Plug In Day. Of course, we’re intent that images of plug-in cars make it onto the evening news, too. We see it as a celebration of how far the EV movement has come, with electrified cars from major automakers plying our roadways in ever increasing numbers.

National Plug In Day, taking place on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, is an unprecedented nationwide observance drawing global attention to the environmental, economic and other benefits of plug-in electric vehicles through events staged in at least twenty major cities nationwide. Plug In America, the Sierra Club, and the Electric Auto Association are teaming up to plan for this effort, which will sound the bell through plug-in parades, tailpipe-free tailgate parties, test-drives and other grassroots activities from Kissimmee, Fl to Honolulu, HI.
