Oregon Pesticide Violations Lead to Settlements

Three Oregon companies violated federal pesticide laws designed to protect consumers, according to three separate settlements with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Nufarm Americas, Inc., Morrow County Grain Growers, Inc. and Grange Cooperative Supply Association will pay $127,000 for selling mislabeled pesticide products in Oregon.
“When pesticides aren’t handled properly they can make people sick and harm the environment,” said Scott Downey, Manager of EPA’s Pesticide Unit in Seattle. “Companies must label products correctly and according to the law so people can use them safely.”

Germany Energy Concerns Amid Nuclear Shutdown

On 30 May, in the aftermath of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that Germany would close all of its 18 nuclear power plants between 2015 and 2022, which produce about 28 percent of the country’s electricity.
Eight have now been taken offline, and with the winter coming on Berlin is scrambling to make up the energy shortfall lest the country suffer blackouts combined with the need to import massive amounts of electricity.
Despite Germany’s Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (German Development Bank) being set to underwrite renewable energy and energy efficiency investments in Germany worth $137.3 billion over the next five years, Merkel’s government has now announced that in addition to going green, it will also build a dozen coal-fired power plants as part of the country’s future energy mix. In order to assure the energy transition, the government also plans to subsidize new natural gas power plants as well.

The generated image vividly captures the scale and significance of Conergy's groundbreaking solar park project in Hawton, Nottinghamshire. This panoramic view showcases Britain's largest free-field solar installation, spanning an impressive area equivalent to 20 football fields. In the foreground, we see the heart of the project: 21,600 Conergy PowerPlus solar modules arranged in neat, orderly rows. These high-performance panels gleam under a typical British sky, partly cloudy with sunlight breaking through, symbolizing the potential of solar energy even in less-than-ideal weather conditions. The image effectively conveys the project's rapid completion, a key point from the article. A team of workers, visible in hard hats and safety vests, represents the 100-strong workforce that accomplished this feat in just six weeks. Some team members are shown installing the final panels, while others inspect the already installed ones, illustrating the race against time to finish before changes in feed-in tariffs took effect. Contrasting with the high-tech solar installation, the background reveals the rural landscape of Nottinghamshire. Green fields and scattered trees emphasize how this modern renewable energy project integrates into the traditional countryside, highlighting the balance between technological progress and environmental preservation. A subtle but important detail in the image is a small inset showing a clock face. This clever addition represents the time pressure mentioned in the article, reinforcing the remarkable achievement of completing such a large-scale project in only six weeks. The Conergy logo, visible on some equipment in the scene, acknowledges the company's pivotal role in this record-breaking installation. This detail ties directly to the article's focus on Conergy's accomplishment. Overall, this image serves as a powerful visual companion to the article. It effectively communicates the scale of the 5 MW solar park, the speed of its construction, and its significance in the British renewable energy landscape. The image brings to life the article's key points about the project's size, rapid completion, and its place in the rural Nottinghamshire setting, making the technical achievement more tangible and impressive to viewers.

Reducing Carbon Emissions: The Impact of Conergy’s Solar Park

The Conergy Group has completed Great Britain’s largest solar power plant. The 5 MW free-field park is situated in Hawton, near Newark on Trent in Nottinghamshire. The “fast-track” project was built in cooperation with Conergy’s local partner Lark Energy and was completed only six weeks after receiving the planning consent on May 24, 2011.
The local residents supported the green project from the beginning on: A community research conducted prior to the installation showed that 100% of the respondents generally favoured the idea of solar energy as a clean, renewable energy solution with no emissions. 92% of those who came to an open event in March 2011 supported the Hawton solar park. “I am sure in time this could be a major opportunity for renewable energy to prove to be a major benefit”, concluded one respondent.“
The project was clearly a race against time to meet the deadline of July 31, 2011 – but we made it, even more than two weeks beforehand thanks to our brilliant solar expert team”, says Robert Goss, Head of Conergy UK. “The deadline was imposed by the recent review of the Feed in Tariff incentive payments for large-scale solar projects that are to be slashed by 72%. All parties showed great determination to support this exciting project which will be one of a very few large solar projects installed in 2011.”
