Green Seal Expands Certification to Nearly All Cleaning Products
New Standards Raise the Bar
Washington, D.C., August 16, 2011 — Green Seal, Inc. has released two major standards that open the door for nearly every cleaning product on the market to earn eco-certification. As the nation’s original “green seal of approval,” Green Seal continues to lead in identifying safer, more sustainable products.
New Standards Cover a Wide Range
With the launch of GS-52 and GS-53, Green Seal now sets clear, science-based benchmarks for specialty cleaners. These include household and institutional products like:
- Dish soaps
- Graffiti removers
- Automotive cleaners
- Deck and outdoor solutions
- Odor neutralizers
- Polishes and waxes
At the same time, the guidelines offer direction for selecting effective and safer disinfectants and sanitizers.
Focus on Health, Safety, and Performance
Because cleaning shouldn’t compromise health, these new standards prioritize the well-being of both workers and building occupants. Even better, Green Seal ensures that certified products actually work. The standards include functional performance testing alongside health and sustainability metrics.
Making Green Choices Easier
“With these important new standards, virtually all cleaning products can now be Green Seal-certified,” said Green Seal representatives. This expansion makes it easier for businesses, schools, and households to choose verified green products with confidence.

With the launch, Green Seal now offers standards for most types of cleaning products. Green Seal standards for cleaning products have been used for over a decade to help shoppers and purchasers identity environmentally preferable options.
Why Certification Matters Now More Than Ever
Consumers today face endless “green” marketing claims—many unverified and misleading. Because of this, independent certifications like Green Seal’s offer real accountability. These new standards cut through the noise and help identify products that are safer, cleaner, and proven to perform. At the same time, they give manufacturers a clear roadmap to improve sustainability. As a result, Green Seal’s certification process builds trust, supports health, and empowers smarter purchasing in every setting.

Green Seal Expands Reach with New Cleaning Standards
Since 2000, Green Seal-certified cleaning products have appeared in schools, hospitals—even Yankee Stadium. These trusted products help protect both people and the planet. Because of this, institutions and also consumers continue to demand safer, greener solutions.
Dr. Arthur Weissman, President & CEO of Green Seal, explains:
“Institutional purchasers, as well as consumers, are continuing to seek cleaning products that are safer for workers, building inhabitants, and families. With the launch of GS-52 and GS-53, virtually all cleaners used in these settings can be Green Seal-certified, which will make the job of finding verified green products much easier.”
Apply Online, Stay Compliant
Companies can also download standards and apply for certification directly at www.greenseal.org. Even better, those submitting multiple products may qualify for discounts. The process includes data review, marketing assessment, and a site audit. Annual monitoring ensures certified products stay compliant.
A Strong Step Toward Safer Cleaning
Green Seal’s updated standards mark a major milestone for responsible cleaning. They also give consumers and institutions the tools to make informed, eco-conscious choices. Even better, these standards demand proof—not just promises. At the same time, they challenge manufacturers to do better, raising the industry bar. Because clean shouldn’t come at the environment’s expense, these changes help ensure that green really means green. Now, it’s finally up to all of us to choose wisely.
