SFI Standard: Maine’s Forests Embrace Sustainability
Groundbreaking Pilot Certifies 1.4 Million Acres
In a landmark move for sustainable forestry, Maine’s woodlands have taken a giant leap forward with SFI forest standards. For they are on a pioneering pilot project. One has most notably resulted in the certification of 1.4 million acres under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) forest Standard. This achievement marks a significant milestone. More importantly and in responsible forest management.
Corporate Giants Lead the Charge
Time Inc., Hearst Enterprises, and National Geographic Society have joined forces. That’s with paper industry leaders Verso Paper Corp. and Sappi Fine Paper North America. Together, they’ve spearheaded this innovative initiative. The project’s success also demonstrates the growing commitment. Most importantly to environmental stewardship among major corporations.

Two-Phase Approach Yields Results
The pilot unfolded in two strategic phases. Initially, 620,000 acres received certification in 2010. The second phase, completed recently. That phase more excitingly added another 790,000 acres to the tally. This phased approach also allowed for careful implementation and evaluation of the certification process.
Simplifying Sustainability for Landowners
A key innovation of this project is also its accessibility. The team developed a template. That’s essentially to streamline the certification process for medium-sized landowners. This tool further simplifies the development and also the implementation of forest management plans. Consequently, it’s now easier for more landowners to participate in sustainable forestry practices.
SFI Standard: A Comprehensive Approach
The SFI Standard stands out for its rigorous requirements. It encompasses 14 core principles. Those that promote sustainable forest management. These principles address crucial aspects such as:
- Water quality protection
- Biodiversity conservation
- Wildlife habitat preservation
- Safeguarding species at risk
- Preservation of forests with exceptional conservation value
Global Recognition Boosts Demand
The SFI Standard’s credibility is reinforced by its global recognition. Respected organizations worldwide participate. That’s also including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the UK government’s Central Point of Expertise on Timber. Thereby also acknowledge its value. This recognition is driving increased demand for SFI-certified products.
Looking Ahead: Expanding the Model
The success in Maine serves as a springboard for future initiatives. Participating companies are already exploring ways to expand this model. Their goal is to promote responsible forest practices by encouraging more landowners to certify their forests under the SFI Standard.
Maine’s achievement in forest certification represents a significant step. Especially towards sustainable resource management. As this model proves its worth, it paves the way for similar initiatives across North America and beyond. The future of our forests looks greener, thanks to the collaborative efforts of industry leaders and forward-thinking landowners.

The SFI Standard is based on 14 core principlesΒ that promote sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value. About 10 million family forest owners account for more than 60 percent of private forest lands in the United States. The State of Maine has more than seven million acres/ 2.8 million hectares certified to the SFI Standard.
Source: SFI Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, and is solely responsible for maintaining, overseeing and improving the internationally recognized Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program. Across North America, about 195 million acres/79 million hectares are certified to the SFI forest management standard, making it the largest single forest standard in the world. SFI chain-of-custody certification tells buyers the percentage of fiber from certified forests, certified sourcing and/or post-consumer recycled content.
Finally, the SFI programβs unique fiber sourcing requirements promote responsible forest management. Essentially on all suppliersβ lands. Also, SFI Inc. is governed by a three-chamber board of directors representing environmental, social and economic sectors.
