Nuclear India: The Controversy Over Safety Issues

India’s Government Reluctantly Releases Report on Nuclear Power and Public Health

After years of silence, India’s government finally released a long-delayed report on nuclear power and its effects on human health. Activists and scientists had pushed for transparency. Yet officials hesitated—until public pressure forced their hand.

The report, compiled by the Department of Atomic Energy, was meant to reassure the public. However, it raised more questions than answers. Officials claimed nuclear plants were safe. At the same time, they admitted to incomplete data and limited community health tracking. Even worse, independent experts were not allowed to verify the findings.

Protesters in India demand transparency on nuclear safety and its health impacts.

In areas near nuclear plants, locals continue to report high cancer rates, birth defects, and chronic illnesses. Despite this, the government insists there’s no proven link. Critics say the lack of serious investigation amounts to a cover-up. They argue the government protects the nuclear industry at the cost of public health.

India plans to expand its nuclear energy program. As a result, environmentalists demand independent research and full disclosure. Without it, communities remain vulnerable. For now, the debate over safety continues—and so does the risk.
