Ventura Water with Patagonia Celebrates Creativity

Ventura Water with Patagonia & iThentic Launch 2nd “Water: Take 1” Film Contest

Ventura Water has partnered with Patagonia and iThentic to present the second annual “Water: Take 1” online short film contest. The contest invites global filmmakers to create water-focused short films, spotlighting conservation, community water connections, and also the value of this vital resource.

🎬 What’s New in Year Two

This year, filmmakers are encouraged to showcase local water issues in creative formats—whether drama, documentary, animation, or sci-fi. The contest launch took place March 19, 2013, at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach Hotel on World Water Day. Hundreds of attendees came together to celebrate creativity and water stewardship  .

A $1,500 grand prize awaits the winning filmmaker. Last year’s awards evening drew over 150 people to the Brooks Institute, emphasizing filmmaking as a powerful tool for environmental awareness.

Why It Matters

  1. Water conservation gains visibility: The contest raises awareness about water issues in Ventura and beyond.
  2. Community collaboration grows: Ventura Water with Patagonia, and iThentic unite to inspire civic engagement on World Water Day.
  3. Art meets activism: Short films help translate water data into compelling narratives, most certainly reaching diverse audiences.

As a Patagonia spokeswoman noted, this creative approach between Ventura Water with Patagonia underscores “how we can all be part of the solution if we work together.”

Finalists will present their work at a public screening, with winners announced by a jury panel hosted in Ventura.

Together, Ventura Water and Patagonia are doing more than just sponsoring a contest. That’s most definitely because they’re shaping the conversation around local and global water stewardship. While traditional outreach can fall flat, this creative partnership taps into storytelling to spark real engagement. In fact, short films can break through where statistics can’t, helping viewers connect emotionally with water challenges and solutions. Moreover, the partnership demonstrates how public utilities and mission-driven brands can collaborate for meaningful impact. With the support of Patagonia’s environmental leadership and Ventura Water’s community focus, Water: Take 1 becomes more than a contest—it most definitely becomes a call to action.

The Bigger Ripple Effect: Ventura Water with Patagonia and Others

Patagonia’s ongoing “Our Common Waters” campaign, running through 2011–2013, aims to promote clean, accessible water for all . This contest fits neatly into that broader initiative that’s also supporting film as a catalyst for environmental change.

Meanwhile, Ventura Water’s Sustainable Ventura newsletter with Patagonia also highlights the partnership’s vision: to elevate the public’s appreciation for water and inspire conservation  .

Final Word

The second “Water: Take 1” contest brings together creativity, community, and also conservation in a powerful way. So by fusing film and environmental advocacy, Ventura Water, Patagonia, and iThentic are helping safeguard one of our planet’s most essential resources—one short film at a time.

Finally, a submission period for entries is March 20-September 3, 2013. In addition, you can register at www.watertake1.com. As well, 10 finalists will be named and a jury-awarded Grand Prize of $1,500 will also be presented to the Grand Prize Winner. This will also be announced at an event hosted by the Brooks Institute of Photography later this fall.
