How Data Centers are Using Renewable Energy to Lessen their Carbon Footprint

Data Center Energy Technology Cuts Power Consumption

NYSERDA Powers the Future: $5 Million to Slash Data Center Energy Use!

Let’s hear it for data center energy technology. I’m super excited to share some incredible news about how New York is tackling one of our biggest energy challenges. Moreover, this initiative could change how we think about sustainable technology!

Big Money for Smart Solutions for Data Center Energy Technology

NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) has launched an amazing program with a whopping $5 million investment! Furthermore, they’re targeting one of our biggest energy hogs – data centers and IT systems across New York State.

This program, called “Innovations in Data Center, Information and Communications Technology Energy Efficiency,” aims to accelerate market-ready solutions. Additionally, it focuses on early-stage technologies that can dramatically cut the energy footprint of information systems.

Why This Matters for Our Green Future

Did you know that data centers consume about 3% of all power in New York State? That’s huge! In fact, for IT-heavy businesses, energy costs can reach up to 30% of a data center’s total operating expenses. Consequently, finding ways to reduce this consumption creates both environmental and economic benefits.

“Governor Cuomo has made it a priority to reduce the cost of doing business in New York State,” explains John B. Rhodes, President and CEO of NYSERDA. “This funding for innovative technologies supports efforts to reduce operating costs while increasing energy efficiency of vital IT services.”

Show Me the Money: Funding Categories

NYSERDA isn’t playing small here! They’re offering serious funding across multiple categories:

  • $100,000 for research or feasibility studies
  • $300,000 for pilot demonstrations
  • $500,000 for product and technology development
  • $1 million for large-scale demonstrations showing significant innovation

Therefore, companies of all sizes can find appropriate support for their green tech ideas. Meanwhile, NYSERDA will select projects competitively through three proposal rounds running through April 2015.

What Technologies Make the Cut?

I’m particularly excited about the range of innovations eligible for this program! For instance, monitoring and measurement technologies that improve data center efficiency qualify. Similarly, novel hardware or software solutions, cutting-edge cooling systems, and on-site power generation all fit the bill.

Hence, this program opens doors for creative approaches to one of our most energy-intensive industries. Subsequently, we could see breakthroughs that benefit the entire tech sector!

The potential impact is enormous since improving data center efficiency helps decrease overall energy use. Therefore, it also reduces demand on our electric grid, creating widespread benefits beyond just the tech industry.
