A very captivating documentary called VANISHING OF THE BEES is something everyone should watch in the comfort of their own homes. The film explores the mysterious and massive disappearance of honeybees across the world, following the lives of beekeepers in crisis, and discusses not only the ramifications of these tragic losses but potential causes and solutions as well.
“We’re thrilled to share the story of the bees, which encapsulates so many relevant and important issues going on with our planet today,” said directors George Langworthy and Maryam Henein. “When we started making this film we had no idea how crucial bees are to our lives and the extent to which the current agricultural landscape affects their survival. Bees are the modern canary in the coal mine and they have a vital message to impart. In telling this tale, we also emphasize the power people have to make a difference and offer concrete ways to help the bees and everything else on this planet.”
“I was so stunned to learn about the degree to which bees have disappeared and the severe impact this occurrence has had and will continue to have on our planet,” said Ellen Page. “It was an honor to lend my voice to the narration of this documentary and to be a part of a film that calls attention to a crisis that needs to be addressed, and that profoundly inspires change.”
The DVD’s special features include: Honeybee Rescue – how to remove a bee colony from your property without harming the bees and Beekeeping in France – which covers the history of beekeeping in France and the origin of the modern beehive, as well as an animated short film on the disappearance of honeybees by the film’s animator, Antanas Skukas, called Colony Collapse Disorder (An Unfinished Story).
VANISHING OF THE BEES will be released on DVD by True Mind/Entertainment One with a suggested retail price of $19.98 and will be available at Amazon.com, Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble and other select retailers. The film will also be available via digital retail for $14.99 on iTunes and other leading Internet Video-On-Demand outlets courtesy of digital distributor, FilmBuff.
The film’s score includes music by Brian McBride – an independent artist and member of the band Stars of the Lid. His contribution to the soundtrack, titled “The Effective Disconnect” is being released by the celebrated indie label Kranky Records and is available on Vinyl as well as CD.
SYNOPSIS: Honeybees, a keystone species vital to sustaining our ecosystem and responsible for 1/3 of our food supply, are mysteriously disappearing across the planet… vanishing from their hives. VANISHING OF THE BEES is an urgent and timely documentary narrated by Ellen Page (JUNO, INCEPTION), which chronicles commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes’ three year quest to discover the meaning of this mystery and their fight to protect and save their honeybees, across the U.S. to Capital Hill and beyond. As scientists puzzle over the origin, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons and solutions, and directors George Langworthy and Maryam Henein uncover the scary truths major corporations and the EPA would go to great lengths to keep concealed. After years of research and a swarm of conflicting opinions, a definitive answer has yet to be established. With interviews from beekeepers, scientists and food and environmental experts from around the world, VANISHING OF THE BEES not only uncovers the story of the Colony Collapse Disorder phenomenon, but also brings to light its consequences and a platform of everyday solutions encouraging audiences to “bee the change” they want to see in the world.
