


Protecting nature is not only about saving forests, wetlands, wildlife and oceans. It is also about protecting the systems that people depend on every day. SNAPP is an initiative focused on creating innovative solutions for people and nature.
That idea helped launch the Science for Nature and People Partnership in 2013. Originally promoted as SNAP and now widely known as SNAPP, the collaboration brought together The Nature Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The question behind the partnership was ambitious: How can protecting nature help provide food, water, energy and security for a rapidly growing global population?
More than a decade later, that question matters even more.
SNAPP Connected Conservation With Human Well-Being
SNAPP started from a simple but powerful idea. Conservation works best when people can see the direct connection between healthy ecosystems and human prosperity.
Wetlands can reduce flooding. Forests can protect watersheds. Healthy fisheries can support food security. Coastal ecosystems can reduce storm damage. Meanwhile, well-managed landscapes can support both biodiversity and local economies.
Therefore, SNAPP set out to move conservation science beyond academic research alone.
The partnership focused on practical solutions. Scientists, policymakers, conservation professionals and local experts worked together on problems where science could lead to measurable action.
That approach helped break down traditional barriers between conservation, development, economics and public policy.
Science Became the Bridge Between Nature and People
When SNAPP launched, The Nature Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Society and NCEAS wanted to create something different.
Rather than having researchers work in isolation, the partnership organized multidisciplinary working groups. These teams brought together specialists from different institutions, countries and fields.
As a result, conservation science could move more quickly toward implementation.
That remains the heart of SNAPP today. The partnership describes its mission as advancing evidence-based, applied solutions to major conservation and sustainability challenges.
Furthermore, NCEAS reports that SNAPP has supported 36 teams representing more than 450 institutions and 1,000 experts from nearly 60 countries.
That growth shows how much the original concept expanded beyond its 2013 launch.
Coastal Protection Became an Early Priority
One of SNAPP’s first major areas of work focused on natural defenses against coastal disasters.
Hurricanes, storm surge and tsunamis repeatedly show the limits of engineered protection alone. Seawalls and levees can help. However, severe events can overwhelm even expensive infrastructure.
Natural systems can add another layer of protection.
Mangroves, coral reefs, marshes, dunes and coastal wetlands can absorb wave energy and reduce some storm impacts. They can also provide wildlife habitat, support fisheries and store carbon.
Therefore, protecting these ecosystems can create several benefits at once.
That idea has become increasingly important as communities plan for stronger storms, sea-level rise and other climate risks.
The Western Amazon Presented Another Major Challenge
SNAPP also examined one of the most complex sustainability questions on Earth: how to balance development with conservation in the western Amazon.
The Amazon Basin contains the world’s largest river system. Its wetlands, floodplains and forests support extraordinary biodiversity. At the same time, millions of people rely on these ecosystems for food, drinking water, transportation and income.
However, roads, dams, agriculture, mining and energy development continue to reshape the region.
That creates a difficult balancing act.
Communities need infrastructure and economic opportunity. Yet poorly planned development can damage fisheries, wetlands, forests and water systems that local economies depend on.
SNAPP’s working-group model aimed to bring science directly into those decisions.
Nature Is Infrastructure Too
One of the most important lessons behind SNAPP is that nature itself functions as infrastructure.
A wetland can manage stormwater. A forest can protect a drinking-water source. Healthy soil can store water and support crops. Mangroves can reduce coastal erosion. Meanwhile, coral reefs can help protect shorelines and support tourism and fisheries.
We often calculate the cost of roads, bridges, dams and power plants. However, natural systems also provide enormous economic value.
Once governments and businesses recognize that value, conservation becomes more than an environmental issue. It becomes part of infrastructure planning, public health, economic resilience and risk management.
SNAPP Continues the Work Today
The collaboration did not disappear after its 2013 launch.
Today, SNAPP continues to support expert teams working on conservation and sustainability challenges. Its focus has expanded across climate, food systems, freshwater, oceans, biodiversity and social innovation.
The partnership also emphasizes science-to-action work. In other words, research should not simply end with a paper. It should help create better policy, stronger tools and practical solutions.
That distinction matters.
Environmental problems move quickly. Therefore, science must reach the people making decisions about land, water, energy, agriculture and infrastructure.
Why This Matters for Green Living
For me, the bigger lesson is straightforward.
Green living is not just about what car we drive, what light bulb we buy or whether we install solar panels. Those choices matter. However, sustainability also depends on protecting the natural systems underneath our economy.
Clean water starts with healthy watersheds. Food security depends on healthy soil, pollinators and functioning ecosystems. Climate resilience depends partly on forests, wetlands and coastal habitat.
Therefore, conservation belongs in the same conversation as renewable energy, electric vehicles, green buildings and sustainable infrastructure.
Conclusion: Protecting Nature Protects People
SNAPP began with a big question. How can protecting nature help meet the needs of billions of people?
The answer continues to develop. Yet the direction is clear.
Healthy ecosystems support healthy communities. Science can help quantify those benefits. Meanwhile, collaboration can turn that science into action.
That is why the Science for Nature and People Partnership still matters.
Protecting nature is not separate from human development. Done well, it can become one of the foundations of a safer, healthier and more resilient future.
