UK Government making “limited” progress on energy efficiency
The Committee on Climate Change has warned the Government. Essentially its progress on energy efficiency in the commercial sector has been “limited”. In addition, previous headway on improving home energy efficiency has “fallen away”. That’s because of following changes to policies last year.
In its latest report to Parliament, the Government’s independent climate advisor highlighted energy efficiency as a concern. It detailed the progress made towards the UK’s legally binding climate change targets. The report emphasizes the need for improvement. Consequently, energy efficiency requires immediate attention. This area poses significant challenges for the government’s goals.
UK Green Building Energy Efficiency
Responding to the report, Paul King, Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council, said: “We must recognize the urgent need for sustainable practices in construction and architecture. The findings outlined in this report serve as a crucial reminder of our responsibility to not only minimize our environmental impact but also to promote innovative solutions that can lead us toward a greener future. It is also imperative that all stakeholders in the industry come together to implement the recommended strategies. As well, we must ensure that we are making significant progress towards achieving our sustainability goals for the coming years.”
Government UK Building Energy Efficiency
The Government shows progress in cutting carbon. However, the Committee also highlights the lack of progress on energy efficiency in our buildings. In particular, previous gains in home energy efficiency are certainly unravelling. This situation is very ironic. Carbon reduction in buildings is the most cost-effective method to tackle climate change. Additionally, it protects households and businesses from high energy bills. The current Government must recognize this urgency. It needs to deliver on key policies, including zero carbon homes and minimum energy performance standards for commercial buildings. Time is running out.
