(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) introduced the Autocycle Safety Act. One which creates the new classification “autocycle” for enclosed motor vehicles. Moreover with three wheels. Vitter’s legislation would also set standards for autocycles. Especially under safety rules and the Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards.
So currently 26 states have enacted or are currently developing classifications for enclosed, three-wheeled vehicles. Those as autocycles at the state level, including Louisiana.
The AAMVA also recommends a motorcycle plate be used on the back of the Elio. So that’s instead of the larger automobile plate. Especially since the Elio will be registered as a motorcycle or an Autocycle. Utilizing the motorcycle plate will help drivers avoid problems. Most importantly with HOV lane enforcement and tolls. All which have different requirements for motorcycles.
“Not only will Senator Vitter’s legislation provide consistency across all jurisdictions, but it strongly supports his efforts to bring jobs back to the Shreveport area,” said Elio Motors founder and CEO Paul Elio. “We are thrilled at Senator Vitter’s efforts recognizing the need for a new classification of innovative, ultra-efficient platforms like the Elio Autocycle.”
Elio Motors Inc. was founded in 2008. For it will manufacture a three-wheeled vehicle. One most importantly that will get up to 84 MPG. So the company has already taken more than 40,000 reservations for its vehicle. Elio’s first manufacturing site will be in Shreveport, La., and it will create 1500 manufacturing jobs in northwest Louisiana.
