Hyundai-Kia and Mojo Mobility Team Up on Wireless EV Charging

Charging Without Cables

No more plugging in. Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) and Mojo Mobility, Inc. have partnered to create a wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging system. This new tech could make powering up your EV as easy as parking it. Their goal? Make charging more convenient, efficient, and user-friendly.

How It Works

Instead of a cable, the system uses magnetic fields to send energy from a pad on the ground to a receiver under the car. This setup allows for fast charging — even if the vehicle isn’t perfectly aligned. That’s a game-changer. Drivers won’t need to fumble with cords or hit an exact spot.

Smart, Safe, and Fast

Mojo’s wireless tech delivers up to 10 kilowatts of power with high efficiency. Even better, it works across different types of vehicles. Hyundai and Kia tested it with modified Soul EVs and reported strong results. The system meets safety standards and supports the push for a cleaner, simpler EV experience.

Why It Matters

As EV adoption grows, convenience becomes key. Many potential buyers worry about the hassle of charging. But if drivers can simply park and charge automatically, that fear fades. Plus, fewer cables mean fewer public charging station breakdowns — and fewer tripping hazards, too.

Looking Ahead

This partnership is part of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project aimed at advancing wireless charging. While the system isn’t in showrooms yet, the research is paving the way. As this tech improves, it could become the standard for home and public charging alike.

The Takeaway

Wireless charging isn’t science fiction anymore. Thanks to Hyundai-Kia and Mojo Mobility, it’s closer to becoming a practical, everyday solution for EV drivers everywhere.
