Konami Wins 2016 NAIOP Spotlight Award for Sustainable/Green Building

Las Vegas-based casino gaming manufacturer is recognized for its commitment to sustainable building practices.

LAS VEGAS, April 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Konami Gaming, Inc., a global leader in casino gaming and systems, was awarded the 2016 NAIOP Southern Nevada Spotlight Award for Sustainable/Green Building for the recently-completed expansion of its its Vegas headquarters. This honor annually recognizes the regional commercial building project that exemplifies sustainable principles as a driving force behind development. Konami’s expanded facility more than doubled its original 160,000-square-foot building with full Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) certification. It became one of the state’s largest facilities to achieve complete geothermal heating and cooling.

“Our new headquarters has been designed and delivered with environmentally friendly and energy-saving considerations in every aspect,” said Tom Jingoli, chief administration officer and senior vice president at Konami Gaming, Inc. “Konami has always been very conscious of the environment, and so it was a natural fit for us to expand our facility with a goal of obtaining LEED certification. We felt this was an important investment to demonstrate our commitment to being good corporate citizens.”

A myriad of environmental initiatives was introduced in addition to the geothermal system — subterranean parking, LED lighting, and completely new roofing, flooring, paint, and furniture — all contributing to LEED silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and this year’s recognition from NAIOP’s Southern Nevada Chapter.

The Los Angeles City Council approved moving forward with the Los Angeles Green Business Certification Program. The City of Los Angeles’ initiative, to be administered by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), will provide information on how to identify a green business and how businesses can adopt sustainable practices. One of the aims is to enable consumers to support firms that strive to protect the environment. The program was announced at a news conference at Ciudad restaurant. Green Seal, Inc., the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Green Globe and dineLA, a part of LA INC, The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau will join the LACCD in its work on this effort.
Joe Veilleux doesn’t view himself as an environmentalist, but he understands how his actions might paint him with that brush. “I’m not an environmentalist,” said Veilleux, general manager of the U.S. operations of natural health ingredient manufacturer Euromed. “I’m a pragmatist. There’s a difference. A lot of environmentalists have characterized their cause as one that pits them directly against corporate America. I’m part of corporate America, but I also recognize the debt I owe to the environment and want to do my fair share to protect it. In the long run, it’s just good for business and there are plenty of examples throughout history of how our environment is one of our most valuable natural resources.” Veilleux’s company is partner with the Everglades Foundation in a campaign dubbed Glade-iator (www.glade-iator.org), which is a model of the public-private partnership Veilleux believes is good for business.
