As Urban populations grow, cities are adapting and changing for a greener future. Cities across the globe are increasing their effort to recycle, but who is trying the hardest? We’ve put together in an infographic with the top cities around the world who recycle the most and how they’re working towards a brighter future.

As I’ve written before, waste is not just an issue in the United States. That’s because it’s a global problem. One that is also being addressed. All by recycling programs also around the world. Yet only a few countries have really cleaned up their acts. That means their recycling rate increased. That’s for example Switzerland and Austria. For their recycling rate is around 50% of their waste.

However, many countries have a lot of room for improvement. For example, Romania. They send about 99% of their waste to landfills. And also just 5% of the world’s population produces about 40% of the total waste.

Here are the facts:

  1. Just 5% of the Earth’s population produces 40% of the Earth’s waste.
  2. The global recycling industry employs over 1.5 million people, making it a $160 billion a year industry!

  3. Switzerland also has the highest recycling rate in the world. That’s with over 52% of its waste getting recycled. Austria comes in a close second with a recycling rate of 49.7%.
