India’s clean tech scene just got a major boost. Alt Carbon, a climate startup focused on carbon removal, has secured $12 million in seed funding. Their mission? They aim to scale up biochar production. They also seek to trap carbon in the soil. This process turns one of Earth’s oldest materials into a modern climate solution.
Biochar as a Scalable Climate Fix
Alt Carbon is betting on biochar—a carbon-rich byproduct made by heating organic waste in a low-oxygen environment. The process, known as pyrolysis, locks carbon into a solid form that won’t re-enter the atmosphere for hundreds of years.
Farmers can mix biochar into soil, improving crop yields and water retention. Meanwhile, Alt Carbon earns carbon credits by proving long-term carbon sequestration.
The company says it’s already running 25 operational biochar kilns across India. It plans to scale to over 200 by 2026.

Big-Name Backers Join the Climate Push
This $12M seed round was co-led by Y Combinator and India Quotient. Other notable investors include Lowercarbon Capital, founded by climate advocate and venture capitalist Chris Sacca.
Alt Carbon’s pitch stood out thanks to its deep local focus. India is the world’s third-largest emitter of CO₂, and its agricultural waste problem is both a challenge and an opportunity. Alt Carbon plans to use farm waste like sugarcane bagasse, rice husks, and coconut shells. These items often end up burned, adding to pollution.
Instead, their pyrolysis kilns turn this biomass into useful, carbon-trapping material.
Verifying the Carbon Capture
One key issue in carbon credit markets is transparency. Alt Carbon aims to tackle that with strong verification. It uses blockchain-backed monitoring to record how much carbon is removed—and for how long. This aligns with global standards and increases buyer confidence.
The startup is also working with international registries like Puro.earth to guarantee their credits are verified and tradable on voluntary carbon markets.
Scaling in a High-Need Region
Alt Carbon’s strategy zeroes in on India’s dual crises: agricultural emissions and rural underemployment. By building kilns close to farms and training local workers, they tackle both issues at once.
“India generates over 500 million tons of crop waste annually. We’re building infrastructure to guarantee it doesn’t end up in the atmosphere,” said CEO Krishnan Venkatesh in a recent statement.
With the new funding, Alt Carbon will expand operations. The company will invest in R&D. It will also build more kilns near farming hubs in Maharashtra, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu.
