The No. 1 trending topic on Twitter in 2010 wasn’t Team Coco, FIFA World Cup or even Justin Bieber. According to Twitter’s analysis, “Gulf Oil Spill” was the most popular trend of this year’s 25 billion tweets, pushing environmental topics mainstream and chipping away from the former “nonprofit-worker-turned-hippie-activist” stereotype.
On January 10th, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today proposed to grant three environmental groups’ petition to end the use of sulfuryl fluoride, an insecticide and food fumigant manufactured by Dow AgroSciences.
The Dow product, approved by EPA as an alternative to methyl bromide, is used on hundreds of food commodities.
Citing concerns about children’s health and noting their current overexposure to fluoride through tap water, EPA’s decision is the second major federal action in three days to address the safety of fluoride for children. On January 7, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services proposed to reduce its recommended maximum level of fluoride in tap water from 1.2 to 0.7 parts per million (ppm), a 42 percent decrease.
37 Parkside Avenue in Southampton, known as “HGA House” was awarded LEED platinum certification by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for achievement in green homebuilding and design. The HGA House is owned by David and Saundra Dubin, who were devastated when their original home was destroyed by fire in late 2009. Today, they are thrilled that their home may be among the top largest green homes in the country.
The Dubins will have architects Ric Stott, Craig Lee and the Hamptons Green Alliance (HGA) to thank for their newly rebuilt and designed home, which has risen from the ashes to become a model of net zero energy, embodied carbon negative green building.
Individuals have already begun speculating about which country will win the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. Many say that the United States is seriously pushing to win the bid. If they do indeed win this bid, not only is the United States Olympic Committee USOC looking to further athletic achievements, but to make substantial environmental changes to the event. This began with naming Andrew Liveris and Dow Chemical the worldwide partner in the Olympics for the next decade.
As fantastic and unifying as the Olympics are, it’s quite a carbon-rich event. So while these changes may only seem minor, they’re actually a huge deal. It has been estimated that over 2/3 of the carbon emissions from the event is a result of some of the 1.5+ million attendees traveling (mostly via airplane) to and from the event.
European cities are reaping the rewards of innovative parking policies, including revitalized town centers; big reductions in car use; drops in air pollution and rising quality of urban life, according to Europe’s Parking U-Turn: From Accommodation to Regulation, published today (January 19th) by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.
