Spring Home Energy: Upgrade Your Efficiency

PNNL News Release Builders, architects, agencies and volume buyers in search of more energy efficient windows at cost-effective prices will soon have additional options available to them with the expansion of the Department of Energy's High Performance Windows Volume Purchase Program. Program managers and vendors will be onsite at a series of events through May to describe the expanded program, enhancements to the website, and how using highly insulating windows could reduce average heat loss by more than 30 percent compared to standard, double-pane windows.

Spring Home Energy: Your Best Chance to Boost Efficiency

Spring isn’t just about flowers and warmer weather. It’s the perfect time to improve your home’s energy performance. As temperatures get milder, you can take steps that save money now—and prep for summer’s heat.

Energy experts say these seasonal upgrades can help homeowners reduce costs, increase comfort, and cut carbon emissions. The best part? Many of these improvements are simple, affordable, and can even pay for themselves over time.

Check Your Windows and Doors

Spring is an ideal time to inspect windows and doors for leaks. Even small gaps can let cooled air escape in summer, forcing your AC to work harder.

Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal leaks. For older windows, consider adding storm panels or upgrading to high-efficiency models. These changes can make your home more comfortable while reducing energy bills.

Upgrade Your Insulation

As the weather warms up, it’s easier to tackle attic or crawl space projects. Improving insulation prevents heat from entering in summer and keeps your home cooler with less AC use.

Adding insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to save energy year-round. Many local utilities offer rebates to help with costs, making this upgrade even more appealing.

Service Your Cooling System

Don’t wait for a heat wave to find out your air conditioner isn’t ready. Spring is the best time for an AC tune-up.

A professional service will clean coils, check refrigerant levels, and ensure your system runs efficiently. A well-maintained AC uses less energy and lasts longer.

Embrace Natural Ventilation

When temperatures are mild, take advantage of natural airflow. Open windows in the morning and evening to cool your home without relying on AC.

Ceiling fans can also help distribute air evenly, making rooms feel cooler while using far less energy than air conditioning.

Spring Home Energy: Consider Bigger Upgrades

If you’re planning renovations, think about energy-efficient upgrades now. Solar panels, high-efficiency HVAC systems, or smart thermostats can all reduce energy use and lower long-term costs.

Spring is often when contractors have more availability, so it can be easier to schedule and negotiate projects.

Spring Home Energy: Save Money and Help the Planet

Every small step toward energy efficiency adds up. By acting in spring, you can lower your energy bills before the hottest months hit.

You’ll also reduce your carbon footprint and support a cleaner, more sustainable future.
