Redleaf Water Introduces Biodegradable BIO BOTTLE
Redleaf Water, a Canadian ultra-premium bottled water company, has launched the industry’s first biodegradable and recyclable water bottle, the BIO BOTTLE. Developed in collaboration with Arizona-based ENSO Plastics, these bottles are designed to biodegrade naturally in both aerobic and anaerobic (landfill) conditions. Made from #1 PET plastic, they can also be recycled without special handling.
Addressing Plastic Waste Challenges
In 2006, over 60 billion PET bottles were used for beverages, yet less than 25% were recycled. This means more than 75% ended up in landfills or as litter. While PET bottles are fully recyclable, the low recycling rate contributes significantly to environmental pollution.
Some competitors have introduced plant-based plastic bottles, which are recyclable but do not biodegrade. These alternatives do not effectively reduce the number of bottles accumulating in landfills or the environment. Redleaf’s BIO BOTTLE offers a solution by being both recyclable and biodegradable.
ENSO Plastics’ Innovation
ENSO Plastics spent three years developing a bottle that combines recyclability with biodegradability. While the specific process remains proprietary, the results have been validated by Northeast Laboratories, a testing facility certified by the FDA, EPA, and the Department of Defense.
Danny Clark, Founder and President of ENSO, explained, “Our bottle is designed to be placed into the existing recycle streams, but if placed into a landfill or other natural environments, depending on the nature’s microbial activity, these bottles will disappear within 1-15 years as opposed to 500 for normal #1 PET bottles.”
The Disappearing Project
To demonstrate the effectiveness of the BIO BOTTLE, Redleaf plans to launch the “Disappearing Project” in Spring 2011. This initiative aims to showcase how the bottles biodegrade in various environmental conditions, highlighting their environmental benefits.
Premium Water with Environmental Responsibility
Redleaf sources its water from an artesian aquifer in Chilliwack, British Columbia. The water undergoes a proprietary purification and bottling process, resulting in high oxygen content and a pH of 8.3. These qualities are known to offer health benefits such as increased alertness, hydration, and stamina.
Additionally, Redleaf’s production process boasts a 1:1 bottling ratio, meaning no water is wasted during production. In contrast, many competitors have a 6:1 ratio, wasting five gallons of water for every one gallon bottled.
