Hollywood Cars Fuel Vehicles in the Future

Mass market electric vehicles have finally brought electric propulsion to the people. But despite their advanced features, the EVs have familiar styling. That’s not always how we – read: Hollywood – imagined the “Car of the Future.” Here are some of the best examples of how Hollywood has portrayed the future of vehicles.
Back to the Future (1985)
Year in Movie: 1985/1955
Car: DeLorean DMC-12
Fuel: Plutonium/biofuels
You know the drill: once the plutonium-powered DeLorean hits 88 miles, it leaves flames on the road and vanishes into the past. But the fuel source needed to provide 1.21 Gigawatts of power to the “Flux Capacitor” is a bit problematic — the gang that Doc steals the plutonium from comes for him. So, Doc makes some tweaks to the design and, at the end of the film, the resulting vehicle not only runs on biofuels, it also flies.

GE’s Charge WattStation: A Great Communicator

The first thing you notice about the WattStation by GE, this magazine’s sponsor, is the striking design: a brushed-metal cylinder rises from the pavement and is capped by a circular touch-screen that welcomes you with a “Hello.”

Electric Cars: EV Vehicle 1st Cars

In the flurry of recent news about electric vehicles, a key point about the place of EVs in American history is typically overlooked – in 1900, 38 percent of cars in the U.S. were electric, while only 22 percent ran on gasoline. A 1903 ad for the Studebaker Electric Automobile boasted: “Electric power for automobiles is the simplest, easiest to control, and most practical for general family use.”
Electricity’s near dominance as a propulsion system didn’t last past the early years of the 20th century, but, more than a century later, EVs are poised to regain their place in the mainstream market. The keys to this repositioning lie in the advancing technology: the recently-released Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf are examples of mass-market, consumer-ready vehicles that just happen to run on electricity, while the increasing availability of home and public chargers coincides with new breakthroughs in battery technology that will make charging quicker and easier.

1 Million EVs: Achievements and Challenges Faced

Early last week, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu stood in the rain before a row of electric cars parked on the median at the Department of Energy’s massive complex in Washington, DC, speaking to a crowd of journalists, carmakers and utility executives.
Chu, a Nobel laureate in physics, touted President Obama’s goal of putting 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2015. He then looked further into the future. Driving 100 miles in an electric vehicle, or EV, he said, “is just the tip of the iceberg.” Lithium-ion batteries being tested at the Argonne National Laboratory, which helped developed the battery technology used in the Chevy Volt, could enable cars to travel up to 500 miles on a single charge by the end of the decade. These batteries, Chu boasted, will be “one-third the cost of today’s batteries but have at least three times the range.”
