Green Mountain Energy Trees: A Greener New York

One client of mine use to be Green Mountain Energy. They have been doing a lot of great work. In honor of Earth Month, Green Mountain is partnering with MillionTreesNYC; employees and volunteers helped plant trees today in Brooklyn.
To celebrate Earth Month, Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation’s leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy, is pledging at least 200 trees in 2011 to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s MillionTreesNYC program. In addition, today, Green Mountain employees and customer volunteers joined the NYC Parks Department to help plant 10,000 trees at Marine Park in Brooklyn.

Modern New York power plant with natural gas turbines, solar panels, and wind turbines surrounded by greenery.

New York Emissions Data: Significant Reductions

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) reported today that New York’s competitive wholesale electricity markets have encouraged improvements in power plant efficiency, which has contributed to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emission rates over the past decade.
“Greener power is bringing cleaner air to New York as power markets and public policy work together to encourage more efficient and less-polluting production of electricity,” said NYISO President and CEO Stephen Whitley.
“Competition in wholesale electricity markets has stimulated investments in cleaner generation, increased the use of renewable resources—such as windpower—and encouraged operating changes to improve the overall efficiency of power plants. The efficiencies spurred by New York’s electricity markets have combined with air quality regulations and carbon control programs, such as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, to produce significant reductions in power plant emissions.”
“The NYISO report demonstrates that the state’s air pollution initiatives, combined with more efficient power generation and the increased deployment of renewable power resources, have succeeded in substantially reducing emissions while serving the power needs of New Yorkers,” said State Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis. “But we cannot rest now; DEC is committed to maintaining this progress towards the goal of achieving cleaner air for all New York residents.”

Ford and Green Festival Give Organizations a Chance to Make a Difference with Community Green Grant

Ford and the Green Festival have teamed up to find and fund the most innovative projects to improve the environment in five U.S. cities. The Community Green Grant program challenges organizations and individuals to propose impactful ideas that would improve the environment in their local communities prior to the start of a local Green Festival. Attendees at the Green Festival in each city will vote to select the project proposal that will receive the $5,000 Community Green Grant.
“Being an environmentally responsible company is a key part of the Ford corporate identity,” said John Viera, Ford director of Sustainability & Vehicle Environmental Matters. “By working with the Green Festival, we are able to extend this sustainable thinking beyond Ford and do something tangible and permanent to improve the local community following each event.”
Before each event opening, a panel from Green Festival and Ford will select a group of Community Green Grant finalists from among the proposals submitted. During the Green Festival, the finalists’ project proposals will be presented in the Ford Pavilion, with the winner of the Community Green Grant chosen by a vote of festival attendees.
