Arctic Ecosystem: Understanding Its Vital Role

Michael LeVine, Oceana’s Pacific Senior Counsel, issued the following statement in response to Shell Oil’s announcement that it would try to drill up to ten exploration wells in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas over the next two years:
“Americans deserve affordable energy and healthy oceans. We can reach that goal by relying on good science, being prepared, and having a full and fair public dialogue. Unfortunately, Shell has chosen to greatly expand its proposed drilling, rather than working toward a lasting, responsible plan for the Arctic. It appears that we will be faced, once again, with proposed drilling that the government simply cannot approve consistent with its stewardship obligations.

ZOTOS International Meets Carbon Neutral Goal.

Zotos International, Inc. announced today that all of the company’s corporate offices as well as its manufacturing operations are now carbon neutral. Working with Verus Carbon Neutral, Zotos has offset 100 percent of its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its manufacturing plant in Geneva, NY as well as its offices in Darien, CT; Arcadia, CA; and Rosemont, IL. With a carbon footprint of 7,430 metric tons, Zotos is one of the first U.S. companies in the beauty industry to completely neutralize their operations.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are direct, from sources that are owned or controlled by a company, including fossil fuels burned on site and emissions from vehicles. Scope 2 GHG emissions are indirect, resulting from electricity, heat or steam generated off site but purchased by a company.

To Commemorate Earth Month, Green Mountain Energy Company Presented the University of Houston with $140,000 to Fund University’s First Solar

In honor of the 41st Earth Day, Friday, April 22, the University of Houston and Austin-based Green Mountain Energy Company announced several new green initiatives for the University.
UH-Solar-Check-5.21_Green Mountain presented the University with a check for $140,000 to fund UH’s first solar array – a new 15.58 kilowatt (kW) AC solar panel system. The two organizations also announced the formation of the Green Mountain Energy Solar Internship and the naming rights of the Green Mountain Energy Company Private Dining Room.
“This is such an exciting partnership, and the University of Houston is honored to be chosen for this gift,” said Emily Messa, assistant vice president for University Services at the University of Houston. “Not only will the solar array display our commitment to green initiatives and help our university in conserving energy, but it will also become a valuable teaching tool for our next generation to continue this movement of sustainability.”
