Kaiser Permanente’s Renewable Energy Commitment

Kaiser Permanente’s Santa Clara Medical Center has gone live with solar power, becoming one of the country’s first major medical centers to receive a significant amount of its energy from the sun.
“Kaiser Permanente has a long history of energy conservation and environmental stewardship, and our use of solar and other forms of renewable energy further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to improving the overall health and well-being of our members and the communities we serve,” said Gregory A. Adams, group president, regional president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan/Hospitals, Inc. in Northern California.
Kaiser Permanente agreed in March to install solar power systems at 15 of its California facilities — deploying at total 15 megawatts of solar energy — by the end of 2011.

Aid by Trade Foundation: A Powerful Voice for Change in Africa

James Shikwati, known for his criticism of classic development aid, is to join the Board of Trustees of the Aid by Trade Foundation. The founder of the Kenyan Inter Region Economic Network supports the Foundation’s innovative development approach: the Aid by Trade Foundation does not transfer any financial resources to Africa but helps people to help themselves through the Cotton made in Africa initiative.
The Aid by Trade Foundation has recruited the Kenyan market economist James Shikwati to its Board of Trustees. “I support the Foundation’s initiative to offer an opportunity to African smallholder cotton farmers to connect to global markets,” he says. “I believe that those who want to help Africa should trade with the continent and support value added production there.”

Ford Georgia Tech school bus

Ford and Georgia Tech partner on “Green Eco School Bus” – nation’s first hydraulic hybrid school bus conversion

The Ford Motor Company Fund and the Georgia Institute of Technology are partnering on the nation’s first conversion of a traditional school bus to a hydraulic hybrid vehicle that runs on recycled biofuel. Atlanta Public Schools (APS) donated the bus for the project.
Conducted by Georgia Tech, the project is financed by a $50,000 Ford College Community Challenge Grant, one of five given annually for a student-led project that matches university resources with an urgent community need related to sustainability. This project focuses on converting existing school buses into hydraulic hybrids, which could lower greenhouse emissions and reduce transportation costs for schools.
Michael Leamy, Georgia Tech assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and his students have designed and developed the hydraulic hybrid system for the 16-passenger school bus, and its installation is nearly complete.

Cellulosic Ethanol Facilities Sprout Up in Four States – USDOE

A shift in biofuel production to cellulosic biofuels is underway as both demonstration and commercial-scale power plants are opening or moving closer to completion. In the commercial arena, Poet, the largest U.S. producer of ethanol, is planning construction this year of Project Liberty, a cellulosic ethanol plant in Emmetsburg, Iowa, that will use corn cobs from local farms to produce 25 million gallon per year of ethanol. The plant will be co-located with Poet’s current corn grain ethanol plant at the Emmetsburg site and should start commercial operations in 2011. DOE has provided $80 million in funding for the facility, and in late January, the Iowa Department of Economic Development approved a $5.25 million grant, bringing Iowa’s total contribution to $20 million. Poet’s pilot-scale plant in Scotland, South Dakota, is already producing cellulosic ethanol at a rate of about 20,000 gallons per year and has successfully driven the cost of ethanol down from $4.13 per gallon to $2.35 per gallon, as the company aims for a commercial cost below $2 per gallon. CAES Energy Center: Pioneering Clean Industry

NYSERDA, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) and RadTech International today announced the establishment of a new research, development and industrial testing center to help make manufacturing processes in New York State more energy efficient, environmentally friendly and economical.
NYSERDA will provide nearly $1 million in funding for the Ultraviolet Light (UV) and Electron Beam (EB) Process Curing Systems Technology Center in Syracuse, N.Y, which will leverage more than $1 million in SUNY and private capital from industrial partners.
The center will advance the development and adoption of formulas that produce little to no harmful emissions in the manufacture and application of inks, paints and coatings, as well as resin binders used in the fabrication of composite materials such as fiberglass composites used to make wind turbine blades. It will also serve as a center of expertise with equipment and analytical laboratory capabilities to help manufacturers independently test and verify how these advanced technologies will work on their products while saving energy.
