U.S. Bancorp and SolarCity Announce New $158 Million Fund to Finance Solar Projects

SAN MATEO, Calif., June 1, 2011—SolarCity®, a national leader in solar power system design, financing, installation, monitoring and energy efficiency services, today announced the creation of a new fund to finance an additional $158 million in commercial and residential solar projects in 2011 in partnership with a subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB). The $158 million fund increases SolarCity’s total solar project financing funds to more than $1 billion, and the company now has more than 14,000 solar customers.
“U.S. Bancorp continues to be a proven leader in solar project financing,” said Benjamin Cook, SolarCity’s vice president of project finance. “SolarCity has already created more than $1 billion in solar financing capacity through fourteen funds with six partners, and we are just getting started.”
SolarCity will use the new fund to finance its SolarLease® and power purchase agreement (SolarPPA™) offerings. SolarCity’s affordable financing options make it possible for customers to save money by installing solar, because homeowners and businesses can pay less for solar than they currently pay for electricity from their power company.

Results indicate BPA accumulates more rapidly within the body than previously thought

A new University of Missouri study shows that the exposure to the controversial chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) through diet has been underestimated by previous lab tests. In the study, researchers compared BPA concentrations in mice that were given a steady diet supplemented with BPA throughout the day, compared to the more common lab method of single exposure, and found an increased absorption and accumulation of BPA in the blood of mice.
Cheryl Rosenfeld, associate professor in biomedical sciences and Bond Life Sciences investigator, found BPA in diet has been underestimated by previous lab tests.
This is the first study to examine concentrations of BPA in any animal models after exposure through a regular, daily diet, which is a better method to mirror the chronic and continuous exposure to BPA that occurs in animals and humans. Cheryl Rosenfeld, associate professor in biomedical sciences and Bond Life Sciences investigator, is the corresponding lead author of the study published in Environmental Health Perspectives on June 6.

Bell Aquaculture Expands Sustainable Fish Farming

Redkey, IN – June 6, 2011 – Bell Aquaculture, a pioneer in sustainable fish farming operations, broke ground Friday on a $5 million expansion at its production facility in Albany, IN — the nation’s largest yellow perch (Perca flavenscens) fish farm. The announcement is made by Norman McCowan, president of Bell Aquaculture, who says, “Our team has been working diligently to bring this expansion to fruition and are thrilled the financing finally came together to help fuel Bell Aquaculture’s continued growth.”
Further, according to McCowan: “We are happy to partner with The Conservation Fund, Indiana Soybean Alliance, and Pranger Enterprise, Inc., to further develop Indiana aquaculture using sustainable water recycling technology. The added capacity of 3 million more fish per year is much needed to meet our growing customer demand.”
Yellow perch is one of the most popular of all North American pan fish. It has a mild, sweet flavor with firm white flesh and low fat levels, making it a favorite in residential and commercial kitchens alike. There’s no taste difference from wild-caught like some other farmed species. In years past, yellow perch was the fish typically served at Friday Night Fish Fries in the Great Lakes region, particularly during Lent (the period prior to Easter).

NYSERDA Increases hydroelectric, wind and biofuel energy, creating up to $500 million in economic benefits to state and enough clean energy to power 145,000 homes

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Public Service Commission (PSC) have awarded $191 million to 17 power projects across the state that will produce and deliver renewable electricity to New Yorkers.
In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, NYSERDA estimates that these power projects will produce nearly $500 million in economic benefits over the expected 20-year life of the facilities. The projects will be funded through the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), which is tasked with obtaining at least 30 percent of New York’s electricity come from renewable sources by 2015.
The projects competitively selected include four wind projects, four hydroelectric projects, seven landfill gas-to-electricity projects, and two anaerobic digester projects located at dairy farms. Once operational, the 17 projects will add 315 megawatts of renewable capacity to New York’s generator resource base and produce about 1 million megawatt-hours per year of clean renewable energy. That’s enough clean energy to supply approximately 145,000 homes per year.
