Congressman Markey Says YES To New Heavy Duty Trucks Emission Standards!

Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee and a senior Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement praising today’s announcement of the first-ever fuel economy and carbon pollution standards for medium and heavy duty trucks made between 2014 and 2018. The new standards will help reduce the nation’s oil consumption by 530 million barrels and greenhouse gas pollution by approximately 270 million metric tons. Rep. Markey is co-author of the original fuel efficiency standard adopted by Congress in 2007 requiring the maximum feasible fuel economy standards to be set each year.

Island Water: A Hidden Paradise

On August 17, 2011, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is launching a campaign to raise public awareness and understanding of the landscape architecture profession. A coordinated launch will take place among ASLA chapters in all 50 states, and the Minnesota Chapter (ASLA-MN) is undertaking one of the most ambitious events in the nation by launching seven “floating islands” on an impaired lake inMinneapolis.
Spring Lake, located in the Lowry Hill Neighborhood between I-394 and Kenwood Parkway, was acquired by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) as a wildlife refuge in 1893. Since then, it has become a severely impaired body of water with a shoreline and park ridden with invasive species. This year, ASLA-MN partnered with the Lowry Hill Neighborhood Association (LHNA) to analyze ways to revitalize Spring Lake and its surrounding park. LHNA allocated funds to restore the area to its original designation as a bird and wildlife sanctuary and pledged to have the area removed from the Impaired Waters List of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Clean Water Act. The group’s plan includes design and installation of seven floating islands that will improve water quality, attract beneficial plant and animal species and help to restore the lake to a livable fishing habitat.

Interface founder and chairman Ray Anderson, visionary entrepreneur and champion of the environment

“Interface and the world have lost a great man,” said Dan Hendrix, President and Chief Executive Officer of Interface, announcing that Ray C. Anderson lost a 20-month battle with cancer today. Surrounded by his family, Ray died at his home in Atlanta.
Dan went on to say, “Ray was and continues to be our company’s heart and soul. His iconic spirit and pioneering vision are not only his legacy, but our future. We will honor Ray by keeping his vision alive and the Company on course.”
Ray’s story is now legend: the 1994 “spear in the chest” epiphany he experienced when he first read Paul Hawken’s The Ecology of Commerce, seeking inspiration for a speech to an Interface task force on the company’s environmental vision. Seventeen years and a sea change later, Ray estimated that Interface is more than half-way towards the vision of “Mission Zero,” the journey no one would have imagined for the company, or for the petroleum-intensive industry of carpet manufacturing, which has been forever changed by his vision.
