EPA Wetland Environmental Protection Success Story

The Puerto Rico Land Authority will preserve 1,000 acres of wetlands as part of an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Wetlands help prevent flooding and the pollution of rivers, lakes and streams. The wetlands preserved under the settlement, the majority of which are in Loiza just east of San Juan, will now be protected from future commercial and industrial development. The land will be protected through a conservation easement filed under Puerto Rico law to ensure that it will remain undeveloped forever.
“Protecting wetlands is a priority for EPA, especially in Puerto Rico where they are increasingly threatened by over development,” said EPA Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck. “Through EPA’s settlement with the Land Authority, 1,000 acres of vital wetlands will now be preserved forever.”

City of Stamford Streetlights Cut Costs Significantly

Thanks to being on several email lists I get to read and get all the information. Due to reading my Fairfield County Group, I was able to read what I have been talking about with the environment, energy and the economy. They go hand in hand.
As GE reports and is known that every local budget is shrinking budgets and expanding responsibilities, municipalities are being asked to do more with less when it comes to city improvements.
The City of Stamford was up for the challenge when it began exploring how to light its town more efficiently. The resulting solution, a switch to energy-efficient LED streetlights, will save the city more than $146,000 annually.
