Celebrating Texas’ EPA Energy Building Achievements

A school, a business and a hospital in Texas were among 245 organizations recently recognized nationally by EPA for their achievements in reducing greenhouse gases. The organizations employed innovative solutions to manage their energy demands, saving money and reducing air emissions.
Hartman Elementary School in Wylie, Texas, and Office Depot in Plano, Texas, both were among the top ten overall finishers for EPA’s 2011 ENERGY Star Building Competition. In addition, St. Marks Medical Center in La Grange, Texas, finished first in the hospital category for the competition.

Recycling E-Waste : Industry Export Limits Spark Job Creation

The 4th Bin, the only company in NYC offering door-to-door pick up of e-waste for businesses and residences alike, joins the Coalition for American Electronics Recycling.
Proposed federal legislation to restrict export of toxic electronic waste (e-waste) from the U.S. will spur expansion of the domestic recycling industry and create tens of the thousands of new jobs, leaders of the Coalition for American Electronics Recycling stated this week.
“The U.S. lacks a robust domestic e-waste recycling industry, and the quality jobs that come with it, because our laws promote unrestricted, unfair and unethical trade in toxic electronic scrap,” said Jim Taggart, CEO of ECS Refining. “E-waste exports not only poison the environment and people in developing countries across Asia and Africa, they limit the ability of responsible recyclers to expand our businesses and build our workforce in the U.S.”

WaterSense Program for Efficient Irrigation Systems

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense program announced today that irrigation controllers will soon be the first outdoor product eligible to earn the WaterSense label. The most efficient irrigation controllers, which operate like a thermostat for your sprinkler system by telling it when to turn on and off, may provide home and building owners the ability to save 110 billion gallons of water and roughly $410 million per year on utility bills.
“As much as half of the water we use on our landscapes goes to waste due to evaporation, wind, and improperly scheduled irrigation systems,” said Sheila Frace, Director of EPA’s Office of Water’s Municipal Support Division. “WaterSense labeled irrigation controllers are designed to do the thinking for you and apply water only when needed, to ensure a healthy landscape that doesn’t waste water.”
