Energy Gamble Solyndra: Impact of Bankrupt Eco Companies

Both alternative energy companies declared bankruptcy this year after receiving millions in federal job stimulus dollars. It’s just what the United States does not need right now, says nuclear scientist Michael T. Gamble, an alternative energy researcher and investment-banking analyst.
The public backlash to ill-spent tax dollars could hurt a vital emerging industry – one that is very much key to future U.S. jobs.
“Cheap energy would enable little Silicon Valley businesses to develop phenomenal things because they’re not hampered by the increased cost of doing business,” says Gamble, a former scientist at the Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico and author of Zeroscape (www.zeroscape-thebook.com), a high-tech thriller. “Work with certain technologies, like high-energy lasers, requires large amounts of energy. A little photonics company could be a future Apple.”

Smart Growth Achievements with EPA

Smart growth policies protect health and the environment, strengthen local economies
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today recognized five communities with the 2011 National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. Through this award, EPA acknowledges and supports communities that use innovative policies and strategies to strengthen their economies, provide sustainable housing and transportation choices and protect the environment. The award winners show how communities of any size can use smart growth to become dynamic places to live, work, and play.
Smart growth policies include improving transportation choices to include walking, bicycling and public transit, promoting the safe redevelopment of potentially contaminated areas in local neighborhoods and reducing polluted stormwater runoff into area rivers and streams. These practices help protect Americans’ health and the environment while strengthening local economies.

St Louis Neighborhood: Revitalizing Old North

(Kansas City, Kan., Dec. 1, 2011) – EPA today recognized the community of Old North St. Louis, Mo., with the National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. Now in its 10th year, the award recognizes effectiveness in creating sustainable communities; a robust public involvement process; and partnerships among public, private, and nonprofit stakeholders.
The Old North St. Louis Restoration Group (ONSLRG) is the not-for-profit neighborhood group that laid the foundation for the community’s project. The community of Old North St. Louis used complementary, forward-looking strategies that encourage a mix of land uses, promote walking, rehabilitate vacant buildings, and establish green spaces. Two main blocks of Old North St. Louis have been redeveloped, with new sidewalks, benches, street trees, and streetlights. In addition, nearly 200 homes have been built by renovating abandoned historic buildings rather than demolishing them and by developing on vacant lots.

Costamare Inc: Fully fund the oil spill clean up

As they report:
It’s heartbreaking to see the devastation of our coast and the pristine environment around the Bay of Plenty region because of the ongoing oil spill crisis.
But what’s simply unacceptable is for the owners of the ship to fail to commit to funding the clean up effort while increasing investor’s dividends by millions of dollars.
New Zealanders have been outraged and shocked by this environmental disaster. Locals and government officials are working around the clock on the clean up process but this effort is going to take more than people power – it’s likely to cost millions of dollars. Costamare, the owner of the ship, is yet to commit to funding any local projects restoring our coast after the oil spill.
