FedEx Express Unveils Largest Green Roof at a U.S. Airport

A Mile-High Commitment to Sustainability

FedEx Express has taken a major step toward environmental leadership. At Chicago O’Hare International Airport, the company installed the largest green roof ever built at a U.S. airport.

The project covers 175,000 square feet—roughly the size of four football fields. It tops the FedEx cargo facility and makes a powerful statement: logistics can be green.

Why a Green Roof?

Green roofs help cities breathe. They absorb stormwater, reduce heat, and cut energy costs. For FedEx, the green roof at O’Hare isn’t just an aesthetic choice—it’s a sustainability move with long-term impact.

By insulating the building, the roof helps reduce heating and cooling demands. That means lower utility bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

Plus, the plants create a natural habitat for pollinators and improve the air quality around one of the busiest airports in the world.

Built with Innovation

FedEx partnered with sustainability consultants and green builders to bring this massive project to life. The vegetated roofing system includes drought-resistant plants, a drainage layer, and insulating materials designed for harsh Chicago winters.

The installation also meets LEED certification standards and is part of the FedEx EarthSmart® program—a corporate-wide initiative to improve environmental performance across operations.

Leading by Example

FedEx’s green roof is more than a symbolic gesture. It reflects a company-wide strategy to embed sustainability into every part of its infrastructure—from electric delivery trucks to airport operations.

Chicago’s Department of Aviation supported the project as part of its own push for greener airport design. O’Hare continues to add LEED-certified buildings, electric shuttle buses, and renewable energy initiatives.

Together, FedEx and Chicago are proving that clean logistics are possible—even in fast-paced, high-volume environments.

The Bigger Picture

Green roofs are gaining momentum nationwide. But few reach the scale of what FedEx has built at O’Hare. This project sends a clear message to other industries: sustainability is scalable.

In the air, on the ground, and now on the roof—FedEx is redefining what delivery infrastructure looks like in the 21st century.
